The Gooch vs. Dr. Suess (No, This Isn’t A Joke!)

I’d almost forgotten about our state’s most amazing legislator.

Yesterday the Messenger-Inquirer (Subscription Only) wrote about Jim Gooch and his opponent, Dr. Larry Suess. Yes, really. Dr. Suess.

Here’s an excerpt:

“There was no use considering it when it wasn’t going to pass the Senate,” Gooch said. ” … We tried (an expanded gambling bill) last year and it didn’t work. For the governor to present that to us was not realistic.”

Gooch said, if re-elected, he’ll continue to work on energy issues and “to keep those energy rates low.” Gooch is chairman of the legislature’s natural resources and environment committee.

“We know coal is our most abundant (source of energy) … but we’re going to have to address environmental concerns and burn it as cleanly as possible,” Gooch said. The state also needs to promote the use of biofuels, natural gas development and hydropower, he said.

Last week, Suess said he is concerned that school districts aren’t spending money responsibly and said state Medicare spending should be based on procedures that have the best success rates.

“We must understand what Medicare pays for,” Suess said.

Suess said education would be a priority for him in Frankfort, because people who drop out of high school have costs for taxpayers.

“If you don’t graduate high school, that will cost taxpayers $13,000 a year … for health care,” Suess said. “If a person can’t read or do math, statistics show life span decreases by six to nine years. You want to nip (dropping out) in the bud before it happens.

“We need to take a look at KERA, (keeping) those parts of KERA that work” while revising other portions of the Kentucky Education Reform Act, Suess said.

“As a child psychiatrist, I’ve developed those skills,” Suess said. “… I believe I’m most effective in bringing people together. My training allows me to do that.”

Dr. Suess!

I don’t know anyone who thinks Jim Global Warming Denier Gooch will lose. But you never know.

  1. First it is S-U-E-S-S

The only bad idea is the failure of educating Kentuckians when the Kentucky Department of Education reports close to $800 Million left over in Kentucky educational coffers and high school graduates who aren’t prepared for the workforce let alone be able to survive academically in college as evidence by the disturbingly low ACT scores. I suggest everyone look closely at the LRC’s Educational acountability report at

you will find that school districts have money left over and we are producing a poorly prepared workforce that will have significant difficulty being competitive.

    Are you angry yet??
