The Herald-Leader had a question and answer session with both Bruce Lunsford and Mitch McConnell. You can read about his position on abortion for yourself. The latest SurveyUSA poll shows Mitch McConnell widening his lead over Bruce Lunsford. McConnell is currently at 53 and Lunsford is at 45. Three percent remain undecided. A full eight percent of voters could still change their mind. We remain skeptical that Bruce can pull off an upset, primarily because his campaign has been underwhelming in the department of aggression, but you never know what could happen. We also speak to McConnell campaign staffers on a regular basis who remain skeptical that McConnell can retain his powerful seat. Guess we’ll see what happens Tuesday night. [Mark Hebert]

He’s currently the lead test and electronic technician at Nucafe Instruments, Inc. and represents the public at large. His appointment replace Leonard “Soaring Eagle” Martin, whose term has expired. In a story on Bluegrass Report today, Walter Hawkins brings up the fact that Trey Grayson was endorsed by crazy nutbag Frank Simon in 2007 and demands that Grayson renounce Simon’s endorsement.

What neither Walter nor our stalker bothered to do was research. Because Grayson’s campaign told us back in October that Trey renounced Simon’s endorsement.

The folks who still haven’t renounced Simon’s endorsement? Current State Treasurer Todd Hollenbach and Bruce Hendrickson, Grayson’s opponent in 2007, who now has a sweet state job.

Bigots came out of the blue to ignorantly attack Trey Grayson for having a *gasp* known homosexual on his staff. Oh, the horrors! Oh noes! The gays are among us, Pam! Went so far as grossly attacking said staffer. Thankfully, the H-L folks deleted the commentary but the issue is still hot.

Who gives a flying fuck (yes, I used it– don’t let your kids read this one) about the sexual orientation of anyone’s staff? What bearing does an individual’s sexual orientation have on their ability to do great work? And where do bigots get off attacking someone who is not in the public eye? This isn’t 1920s Mobile, Alabama. We aren’t burning crosses in Ernesto Scorsone’s front yard. Dan Mongiardo is no longer leading the anti-gay hate march like he did in 2004. This is modern America and we’re in the year 2007. Homophobia and other prejudices should be over and done.

No one is certain where the attacks originated. Could be individuals affiliated with the Hendrickson campaign. Could be the Fletcher camp. Or it could be Grayson’s former campaign manager who was let go. Regardless, this is sickening. Not to mention bad for Democrats if it’s coming from that direction. Would only serve to push more Democratic voters toward Grayson if they knew he didn’t hate the gays, right?

This is not an endorsement of Trey Grayson in any way, shape or form. But let’s get one thing clear: Trey Grayson is not a bigot. He’s not sexist. He’s not a homophobe. And he certainly doesn’t make crass judgments as many in his gay-hating party do. Trey’s not the devil on social issues so Democrats and Republicans need to get over it.

The latest polling from the Herald-Leader had Grayson six points ahead with 16 percent undecided. But we’re hearing from two reliable sources that even more recent polling has the race at an absolute dead-heat. Grayson is rumored to be sitting at 36% and Hendrickson at 35%. If that’s the case just eight days from the election, there’s no way not to believe Grayson could lose to the underfunded Democrat in the race.

Couple the latest Grayson commercial with KDP buzz that money is quickly being raised for Hendrickson and the picture gets quite clear. Grayson’s polling numbers have him nervous and he knows he may get beaten November 6.

Kind and generous? Billy Reed has a story about Steve Beshear that proves he’s as genuine as he says he is. Politics aside, character and personal behavior say a lot about a candidate and those two things almost never make it to print. [StraightNFlush]

It’s– we hate to say it– it’s the sound of Democrats effectively conceding the only horse race they’ve got in 2007. Interestingly, LEO offered no endorsement for Auditor or Treasurer. His old self. Louisville Arena Committee Chairman Jim Host proves what a partisan hack he is, appearing in a radio ad for Ernie Fletcher’s reelection bid. To think this man parades around Louisville preaching that he’s not political. Please! [PolWatchers]

OMG. People wake up and begin questioning skyrocketing cost of higher education costs. Turns out people really do want to know what Beshear and Fletcher have to offer on that front and wish they’d hear more about it on the campaign trail. [C-J]

Standing up against the dark side. 200 health care workers protested outisde Carlyle Group Headquarters in D.C. Monday. Their cause? To highlight how the creepy group’s purchase of managed care facilities is screwing the world up. [FDL]

Combination of church and state. Working Families for Kentucky tries to use religion to try to turn voters away from Ernie Fletcher in the upcoming election. Their latest radio ad calls upon Christians to ask for the unvarnished truth. That’s fine and dandy but why do we have to bastardize religion by muddying it with politics? [PolWatchers]

Sen. Mongiardo is being praised for his experience in and passion for health care. The AP says he’s still engaged to Allison Patrick, though we hear that’s no longer the case. Speaking of Mongiardo: Where is he? Put him in a commercial or two! Bring him out of hiding. [AP via H-L]

Doing what’s right. John Yarmuth stands up for free speech and freedom of the press. Continuing to give us the right to protect your anonymity when you forward us private e-mails and dish the dirt about political happenings or office-paid vacations for an elected official’s mistress. [C-J]

Republicans for Beshear. Tons of Republicans showed up in Corbin this weekend to stand in support of Democrats Steve Beshear, Daniel Mongiardo and Bruce Hendrickson. Not good news for Fletcher in former Republican strong-holds. [H-L]

More endorsements. Kentucky Enquirer endorses Steve Beshear and pokes fun of his lack of a plan if gambling should fail. And the Kentucky Post endorses him. Doesn’t look like Northern Kentucky’s in the bag for Ernie anymore. [Enquirer, Post]

Conway, in short, strikes us as a thoroughly qualified candidate. He’s not the political partisan that Stumbo is, nor is he a shrinking violet. We view him as one of the most promising young political leaders in Kentucky, and endorse for him election as its next attorney general.

Think they could be any more bitter over Stumbo’s necessary investigation of Ernie Fletcher?

At the same time they endorse Trey Grayson. Why not Hendrickson? They say he’s been a teacher for 30 years and in politics at the local level for for a decade. But “But neither those experiences nor his involvement in a family business (managing and developing real estate) has adequately prepared Hendrickson for the demands of running a large statewide office, in our analysis.”

The paper’s only reasoning for picking Grayson is that he’s already in office. We have no qualms with their decision to endorse a particular candidate– but couldn’t they come up with a better reason for making that endorsement? Henrdickson’s 30 years of experience aren’t enough to warrant holding office but Grayson’s few years in office are earth shattering? Where’s that logic coming from? Just wondering.

Free rein chicken. The Courier-Journal takes on Stan Lee in a stinging editorial. And we quote their closing line, “He’s a big believer in prayer. Well, if he’s elected that may be just what Kentucky will need.” Ooooh snap. [C-J]

Hell on earth. Kentucky is so dry we’re probably going to burn to the ground. Nearly 230 fires in the past 30 days. Stop burning crap, people! This is serious. [News-Enterprise]

Money man starts a campaign. KREF Chair John Rogers is running for state senate against Republican Caucus Chair Richie Sanders, Jr. Wonder if KREF’s lack of action against blatant campaign finance violations the past several years will come back to haunt Rogers? [PolWatchers]

Somewhat deceptive? The AP sent a fundraising story to wire with a headline that is somewhat deceptive: “Beshear’s fundraising falls short of projection.” Alford was getting at the point that about $400k was an in-kind contribution from the KDP. Regardless, he still reported $5.3 million. Just as Fletcher reported his lesser amount. [H-L]

Speaking of campaign finance. Grayson raised $343k and has $328k on-hand. Hendrickson raised $8k and has $7k on-hand. This is the only horse race we’ve seen the entire cycle and the KDP is rolling in dough this year. Why haven’t they pushed funds into that race? KDP: No fewer than 35 people have called us in the past 12 hours to complain. We’re not trying to be negative but we hope there’s a good explanation. [PolWatchers]

To update that story: Grayson’s campaign has renounced Simon’s endorsement. Something the Democrat we support in the Secretary of State’s race has yet to do.
