What’s horribly embarrassing for Steve Beshear?
This giant nursing home problem:

The first giant blue line? That’s Kentucky.
But back to Steve Beshear. The man has had more than four years to straighten this disaster we call the nursing home system out. And he’s done little.
The legislature? Can’t be bothered.
To get specific, here’s the Kentucky data. Use that search feature for keywords like “sexual” and “abuse” and you’ll be horrified by what you find.

The problem is the Ombudsman Program and the State Ombudsman Kim Baker. Ms. Baker does not visit facilites and there is no oversite of the District Ombudsman. This program gets lots of money to do a job, but obviously, the money is wasted.
This program depends on volunteers and there are some good and many not the best volunteers to look at deficiencies. This program is a waste of money and puts the most needy and vunerable residents at risk.

This report is sad (for the current residents) and scary (for future consumers of their product, like ME) for Kentucky.
And what is it about the South that we just can’t get it right regarding health care for our medically vulnerable?
And what do we need to learn from West Virginia on how NOT to have violations and fines?
Disclaimer regarding southern states: For a bunch of reasons, I do not put Florida in with this group of states–and healthcare is one of them. Also, if you divided Virginia up into the northern part of the state through to Richmond and the central Appalachian regions of that state; the west and southwest areas might look like the rest of the South.

There are some exceptional nursing homes in Kentucky. It’s not like we don’t have the model or a facility can’t be made to properly function under existing circumstances. The proof is out there.
