More Americans sought unemployment benefits last week, though the figures were likely distorted by the winter holidays. Many state unemployment offices were closed this week for the New Year’s holiday, delaying their reporting of data on unemployment claims. That forced the Labor Department to estimate 9 states, more than the usual number. [H-L]

“Dr. Hatemi, a Physician of Conscience”

Doctor, thank you for what you are doing at UK, and I hope you win your suit against it. It is quite intriguing to note that UK’s College of Medicine is refusing to release any data on African-American student retention. It is also well-known that medical schools have one of the highest retention rates of any type of academic institution. They choose top students, and most medical schools work hard to show that their selections were correct. (Typically, only the grueling hospital hours cause an extremely small segment of students to drop out.) This could be a very interesting case, indeed.

    “The Pot & the Kettle”

That the American Family Association is fearful that the downfall of Christianity and a Muslim president by 2060 will lead to family decline and bigotry is really ironic. How have family unity and prejudice fared under the aegis of Christianity? That question provides its own answer.
