In State Rep. Reggie Meeks’ weekly legislative session email blast, we discovered this hilarious tidbit:
Thankfully, now just about midway in the session, the pace continues to build. The Budget, of course, is the focus of attention as our various subcommittees continue to work. And as plans to build Patton U. (emphasis ours), eh, University of Pikeville, receive more public attention, there is a growing discussion of the need for — the impact of — and the statewide consequences for creating this proposed new institution. This will be an entertaining discussion, if for no other reason than it involves a number of high profile, well respected politicos.
Catch that? Patton U.
Hahaha.
It’s funny cause it’s true.

“Imagine Higher Education Without Politicians”
Rep. Meeks’s apt dig at “Patton U.” (UPike) shows how silly and egregious this whole escapade is. To upset and hinder a statewide university system to placate a few influential, but deadhead, politicians is the height of legislative crassness and stupidity. I hope the larger public sees this wild adventure for what it is. Higher education is too precious to leave to self-interested, back-scratching political hacks.

So will they offer special courses at Patton U , such as “Strategic positions to protect your knees” and “How to win friends and influence politicians” ?
Just wondering. Maybe Tina can work there since her book didn’t go over so well.

@ Jinx: You have a vile sense of humor. ;)
@ Novena: Aren’t state universities made by the God of politicians to place their cronies into well-paid, low-sweat positions? (no reference to Jinx’s ‘strategic positions’) :)

Taking the Ball from UKeye”
Good way of putting things, man. I assume you are referring to the likes of the president of UofL, the former state budget director under Patton. What a choice he was to transform a semi-university into an expensive athletic club.

Aw, the university dole–one of poorest states in nation pays two university presidents more than the president of the US. And let’s not talk coaches. Postsecondary education is out of control. The “Council (misnomeri if I ever heard one) on Postsecondary Ed. is another bloated layer (of rotten eggs) that has only helped raise tution to the point that Harvard is starting to look affordable. The only people who can afford KY state sponsored universities are the ones on the Pell grant doles. Screw the middle class students of KY–they’d rather have F-

“Stick with the Private Colleges in KY”
In The Chronicle of Higher Education (2/23/12), Richard Vedder, a well-known economist of education, in an article, “The Kentucky Advantage,” praises several small liberal arts colleges in more sparsely populated areas of the state (Berea, Centre, Transy). He does NOT commend UK, UofL, or any other large state university. Are you surprised? Of course not. Taxpayers are not getting their money’s worth and yet pay the honchos at Louisville and Lexington huge salaries. For what?
