We earlier linked a story about Rocky Adkins urging Morehead State University graduates to oppose the push to move the University of Pikeville into the public system.
But what’s more interesting is Greg Stumbo’s weird decision to attack the MSU Board of Regents over its resolution to oppose the effort.
The Appalachian News-Express had a front-page story about it over the weekend.

Here’s a taste:
House Speaker Greg Stumbo lashed out Friday at Morehead State officials after the announcement of their resolution opposing a plan which would make the University of Pikeville a state-funded university.
Morehead State University’s Board of Regents voted unanimously Friday morning to oppose the plan, House Bill 260, in a resolution to be presented to the Kentucky General Assembly, urging them to reject the proposal.

“When all of the facts are brought out, I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the board will resign or be asked to resign for how poorly they have served the people of this region,” he said. “By making this type of decision without all of the facts, it only makes them look small and petty. Kentuckians should see this for what it is — an attempt to block progress by a group of self-serving individuals.”

Morehead State President Wayne D. Andrews said there isn’t enough money for the proposal.
“House Bill 260 would simply take a shrinking pie and divide it further,” he said. “I am proud of our board, after careful study of the matter and then their decision to oppose it.”

Stumbo first brought the proposal to the university’s administration, calling it one of the missions of his political career.
One has to wonder… what’s smaller and more petty? A highly educated and informed body that actually (primarily) lives in Eastern Kentucky making a decision about education? Or Greg Stumbo attacking them because they’re daring to question his “mission”?
The only folks we know making decisions without all the facts are Greg Stumbo and his pals in Frankfort.

“Stumbo Stumbles on Cow Pie”
Stumbo PR Man: “Greg, it looks like the public is on to us on the UPike issue.”
Stumbo: “What the hell you mean?”
PR Man: “They’re sayin’ it’s you who didn’t do a proper study and that you’re lettin’ cronyism with other pols and political ego carry you way too far.”
Stumbo: “Christ, I thought that ‘mission’ stuff would make me look more principled and committed to education in Eastern KY.”
PR Man: “When was the last time you’ve been there? Remember we got lost near Pikeville last April or so.”

Stumbo is an embarrassment as speaker for the KDP.

I heard an interesting tale of Stumbo personally intervening in a state merit system personnel decision not long after he returned to the General Assembly after his stint as attorney general trying to nail the Fletcher administration for doing the exact same thing. It involved a hiring decision at the Pikeville highway district office made shortly after the Beshear/Prather bunch reorganized the state’s highway districts. I’m not sure if this is going to get out into public consumption or not. It may depend on if the employee who appealed the decision to the Personnel Board decides to appeal that board’s decision to circuit court. But if this does go public, it will make Stumbo’s little rant about the Morehead board of regents look like small potatoes.
