Did Steve Beshear really appoint his cousin to the Murray State University Board of Regents?
Yup:
Gov. Beshear has appointed Jenny L. Sewell to the Murray State University Board of Regents to serve for a term expiring June 30, 2017.
Jenny L. Sewell, of Dawson Springs, is the owner and director of Beshear Funeral Home Inc. The appointment replaces William C. Adams, Jr., whose term has expired.
Jenny Beshear Sewell.
Appointing family members to university boards during an election year doesn’t exactly strike us as, you know, smart.
Note: She got her masters there, so she did attend.

So What?
As long as it isn’t a household member; the appointee is qualified, and it all occurs in the open while the transparency never approaches translucence – what’s the problem.

Uh, transparency?
She may be qualified. But there was no transparency involved.
Murray folks tried for weeks to get information about potential appointees that for several years the governor’s office (even Fletcher) has typically been up-front about. Unfortunately, no one would say anything and got really nervous when asked. They waited til the last minute to drop her name.
But back to the point: the appearance of impropriety is all it takes to make a good thing go bad.

Don’t you think that someone else could have been appointed to the board? After all there are 4 million plus people in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Surely someone could have been appointed without the Beshear last name. Just another case of some of that good old nepotism rearing its ugly head at a time when well, if you’re not a Beshear supporter and giving money you might just get fired from your state job. So much for transparency, huh Stevie?
