Papaw Beshear Filled Sandbags For A Photo Op

April 29th, 2011 · 7 Comments

Yesterday Governor Steve Beshear visited Western Kentucky to assess flood and storm damage.

“Today I have once again seen the damage and destruction that a natural disaster can inflict on Kentucky families,” said Gov. Beshear. “My administration has emergency management officials, members of the National Guard, employees from my office, as well as from a variety of cabinets, out in the field and staffing our Emergency Operations Center in order to ensure that all calls for assistance are met.”

Naturally, that required a photo op in Smithland:

It’s great to see the governor out and about checking on things. But that bit of stopping to pretend to fill sandbags is… it rubs us the wrong way. Particularly when there are countless individuals doing the real work in the same dang photograph.

I’m not mocking them. I’m actually giving Papaw some props. I own a pair of duck boots and have both a wax and quilted Barbour.

Now if his opponent would lose the banker’s collared shirts, we’d be in business.

His hands are going to be blistered if he did that for 5 minutes.

And all the people doing the real work were cursing the disruption and wishing that the asshole and his entourage would leave so they could get some real work done.

At least he cares about the storm damage, unlike a certain circus now touring the state. Williams and the Richie Hilton are out campaigning on their fancy RV, driving through areas hit hard by the storms on their way to political events.
