Time For An Ask Your Legislator Update

November 17th, 2010 · 9 Comments

A week ago I asked for to share questions you want to ask some anonymous state legislators. Here’s a taste of some of the best so far:

  • What is the most underhanded/crooked thing you have seen go on since you were elected? Please exclude anything that was made public.
  • Isn’t our politicians’ unlimited support of the coal industry tethering Kentucky to a dirty, unsustainable source of energy that will soon run out, leaving the state to languish as a polluted backwater while other states that have the foresight to invest in clean(er) forms of energy will prosper?
  • Suppose I want to phone or write a letter to my representative. What is going to get my letter noticed, and not in the “put this is the pile of people to question if I go missing” kind of notice?
  • Why is balancing the budget never addressed via serious tax code reform?
  • I would like to know the truth behind furloughs. Was this budget balancing measure enacted as payback for the failure of casino gambling?

What’s really missing so far is the kind of question would would never get a public, on-the-record response. So. What are those questions? What do you really want to know?

What’s the going price for an important vote and what percentage can be bought?

    In your experience/opinion, obviously:

What percentage of Kentucky journalists are truly unbiased?

Name the most ethical political journalist in the state and the most unethical.

What is the most you’ve made from your legislative salary in any given year?

If you served long enough to qualify for a full legislative pension – how much would it be each year? Would you get paid that amount each year until you die?

What special interests have you voted for knowing that it was not in the overall public interests?

How much opportunity is there to push contactors from your own district (or campaign supporters) into government contracts?

Just a few that will never be honestly answered on the record:

How fast do you drive in your car with legislative plates?

    Do “Downey-style” events still occur?

How many of your fellow legislators enjoy being away from their spouses a little too much and has it ever afffected their votes?

Are you from a dry county and do you drink alcohol when in Frankfort?

Didn’t you only run so you could get the sweet tickets to sporting events and health insurance?

If a tree falls in Frankfort and Jonathan Miller isn’t there to tweet about it, did it really fall?

Do you really read and understand the implications of every provision of every bill?

What is the biggest scam going on with government dollars that we don’t know about?

Do you ever file bills you know will get press but never pass to distract from difficult issues like the budget and education?

Is Lonnie Napier really as dumb as he appears to be?

  • 7 jake // Nov 17, 2010 at 8:42 pm

Yes, Downey-style events still occur and I’ve written about them.

Most drink booze inside their offices.

Can’t wait to push people to spill the beans, though.

    Is wondering Martin Cockring?

  • 9 wondering // Nov 18, 2010 at 2:40 pm

No, but wondering is unimpressed with the Gentleman From Garrard. Longtime legislative watchers will know the reference when I say that I have heard Napier referred to as the Republicans’ Jim Maggard.
