SurveyUSA: Paul Leads Conway By 15 Points

September 4th, 2010 · 14 Comments

The latest SurveyUSA data have arrived and here’s the deal for the U.S. Senate race:

  • Jack Conway 40%
  • Rand Paul 55%
  • Undecided 5%

He’s even down to Rand by 12 in Eastern Kentucky. Loses the Louisville area by 8. This is some serious Grayson territory.

The only category Jack leads? Those aged 65+ and it’s only by 3 points.

Maybe Jack regrets pissing everyone off and losing one supporter after another now?

Will Jack run as a Democrat now?????

He’s losing by 8 in Louisville? OUCH!

    Louisville area.

No, he won’t run as a Democrat. Which is why the DSCC folks spent their entire time in Louisville two nights ago making fun of him and complaining about Mark Riddle.

    Seriously? Making fun of him?

OUCH! Hey, he always has the Stan Lee victory.

I’m a Democrat and support Conway, but he’s not giving voters a reason to vote from him as a candidate, only saying don’t vote for the scary extremist.

Conway needs tell voters why they should vote for him with out mentioning Paul’s craziness. Give them something substantial.

Jake, how does this effect Heiner? Heiner is not part of the tea party extremists but if they show out in force for Paul they will vote Republican all the way.

I doubt it. Why did he even act like he wanted this seat during the primary? It’s not like he’s campaigned since May.

this poll still oversamples repubs and undersamples dems

    “Jack’s Deadly Doldrums”

Many of the above comments are right on target. Conway strikes too many Democrats as:
    –sluggish and slow-moving
–not a real FDR-type Dem and insubstantial on the issues
–hiring a platoon of nitwits as advisors
–lacking enough passion as a campaigner
All this spells doom in Nov. unless some miracle occurs (if Jack loses, he can only blame himself and chances are he will never be asked to run for high office again).

This may be true, but even if you use the breakdowns and modify the numbers based on what the percentage will probably be, you really can’t go below a 8 percent lead – far above the margin of error.
Conway’s camp saying there is a six percent lead is probably based on the 2008 vote, but that was artificially high for Democrats as they were excited for Obama, and Republicans were less than enthusiastic for McCain (and for Bush’s betrayal of Republican values by promoting the bailout, etc.). This year, it’s the Republicans that are enthusiastic and the Democrats who are not.

Does anyone know if the poll asks people their party, or if they already have that information when they call? Conway may be such an embarassment to the Democrats that some Democrats may say they are Republican.

Does anyone know what Mongiardo’s biggest lead was in the primary? Has Conway ever been able to overcome a 15% deficit in any of his campaigns?

I don’t know what Lt. Dan’s biggest lead was, but I am pretty certain that he never broke the 50% mark.

Conway has about a 2 week window to really shake things up. Firing Riddle et al would be a good start, but I don’t think he has it in him to make the choices need to galvanize the Democratic Party and pull enough support off Paul to make a difference.

Baring a backbone transplant (or Paul lighting up a doobie on Fox and/or getting caught in a rest room with Larry Craig) election day Paul 52% Conway 48%.

Caught in a rest room with Larry Craig?

You’re lucky I don’t sue you for forcing that imagery.

    You are the devil.

I don’t know about Survey USA’s sampling. In the primary I think it had Conway leading Mongiardo by only 8 points in Louisville, didn’t he win by over 40?

  • 14 Steve Magruder // Sep 7, 2010 at 9:13 am

Conway’s strategy should have been like Yarmuth’s in 2006: Run as an unapologetic Democrat and let the chips fall. He utilized Wendell Ford to win the primary, but he has not let any of Ford’s spirit seep in.

Now we’re at a point where we can’t talk about Paul’s waffling without mentioning Conway’s waffling at the same time.

Conway’s campaign has been political malpractice, and while I will likely vote for him (because Paul is so outrageous), I will have to do it while pinching my nose, and dreading the election results that evening.
