Rand Paul’s Eastern Kentucky Drug Ignorance

August 27th, 2010 · 13 Comments

Rand Paul still insists that drug abuse should be dealt with at the local level.

Has this man ever been to Eastern Kentucky and seen what local law enforcement does about the drug problem? Not to hate on small town law enforcement, but come on. A little bit of localized money isn’t gonna do a damn thing and we all know it.  Every one of us from Eastern Kentucky know it.

Let’s get personal for a minute.

Does anyone remember Roger Benton? Click here, here, and here if you don’t.

Aside from being the father of my half-sister (boy, do I have some stories!), Benton was once the Morgan County sheriff – and one of about a dozen elected officials in Eastern Kentucky – who went to prison for being part of a massive drug ring. A corrupt set that still exists and runs everything in the Morgan County and surrounding areas to this day.

Knowing what I know and have experienced in Eastern Kentucky, I’d like Rand Paul to tell me how he thinks that crew could effectively deal with the massive drug problem in the mountains.

Don’t forget about Paul Browning and all his troubles while he was Sheriff in Harlan.

Attempted murder, drug dealing, hiring hit men, ended up getting shot and burned. all tied to drugs

    Uh, legalize what?

This isn’t a discussion about marijuana.

I’m not with this drug fight. If people in the mountains want to snort pills — let them.

Don’t take my tax money to police people’s bad habits in eKY.

    Pootie,
What a simplistic view of life. It borderlines on dumb because “your tax money” as you say will subsidize people who are on welfare. If people are on drugs many times they can not hold a job and be a contributing member of society.
While I agree half heartedly that if someone wants to do something to hurt themselves, go at it, but when it hurts society in the long run it effects me.
Rand Paul is in a dreamland if he thinks local counties can take on the drug problem. Maybe they could if it was a small problem. But as all elected local officials, Dem and Rep will tell you, it is a huge problem.
Rand Paul stands alone saying it should be solved on the local level. Its sad.

This may not be a discussion about marijuana but this a discussion of things like Unite. Unite is a program that gives money to the cops you complain about. Jack Conway doesn’t get it. Rand seems to. This is a medical issue and not a law enforcement issue. Feds and the cops want to lock up users and to continue to allow criminal elements to make massive profits off of illegal drugs. We learned from alcohol prohibition. Why can’t we learn that we are repeating it with drugs?

Pootie Tang, I so disagree. Those people who are snorting those pills are killing innocent people when they drive on our roads; they rob hard-working people blind; and some would take a life for a pill, so I do not begrudge the use of my taxes to get the low lifes.

Rand Paul has made a lot of ignorant statements, but I almost think this one is by far the stupidest.

FreemaninKy: How can you say Rand Paul gets it? He plainly stated he did not think the drug problem was a “pressing issue.” Paul can back track all he wants and use every excuse to try to justify his words of ignorance, but we all heard him say those very words. Too late… again!

Sorry guys. Drugs in eastern kentucky were not the pressing issue on the campaign trail. If you believe that print media never take quotes out of context, I have some valuable swamp land to sell you.

As for the drug addicts who kill people in accidents…. That’s the same with alcohol. So that argument has been used but it’s not relevant. We are talking about those who do no harm either way. Believe it or not, there are even professional people who aren’t on welfare who do drugs. Addiction is the issue and those wreckless addicts get drugs in jail and the recovery rate is less than 8 percent in jail.

When did liberals stop being compassionate to drug addicts?

There is no desire to lock up users. The emphasis is on the dealers.

Hey Freeman, I thought if we just had more rich people drugs would go away. So all we need are more Paris Hilton’s and drugs will go away.

I’m of mixed feelings about the drug problems in Eastern Kentucky. The drug task forces don’t really seem to be making any headway – keeping people from killing themselves by overdosing or cardiac arrest (due to meth) just gives them more time to reproduce and making another generation!

    Key,

So, wealth and empolyment have nothing to do with people having a reason to stay clean. Hmmm. Guess the experts have been wrong. As long as we have Jack Conway who fears the evil of Hemp and strong jail time for those not in his family (come to Warren Co. amazing to see who has not been given long imprisionment even though they were dealing).
