Robert Felner Sentenced: 63 Months In The Pokey

May 17th, 2010 · 43 Comments

I’m being cutesy in the subject, but come on. This is the only story I’ve owned and I’m gonna own it. (Even if some mainstreamers are trying to give someone else credit? Come on, Phillip Bailey.)

Nancy has the goods:

Robert Felner, former University of Louisville dean of education, was sentenced on Monday to 63 months in prison for his role in defrauding U of L and the University of Rhode Island of $2.3 million.

Felner — who was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Simpson III in Louisville — pleaded guilty in January to nine federal charges, including income tax evasion.

-SNIP-

Felner’s sentencing will be a step toward ending a case that began in spring 2008, when the University of Louisville reported suspected fraud to federal officials. The investigation involved multiple federal agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Internal Revenue Service.

Now everybody’s focus turns to the upcoming trial of Thomas Schroeder, Felner’s co-defendant in the scandal.

I’m not going to rehash everything in a long, drawn out story. So… let’s take a trip down the Felner memory hole:

Seems like just yesterday I was asking Mark Hebert (then of WHAS11) how to get the Courier-Journal’s education reporter to take the story off my hands. I’m glad I listened to his advice to do the story on my own.

Peep the dozens upon dozens of other stories after the jump…

It’s been a long two years.

    Congrats Jake! Job well done!

  • 2 tbrauch // May 17, 2010 at 1:31 pm

Wow… was it really 2 years ago the federal agents knocked on his door and accompanied him to the restroom?

  • 3 jake // May 17, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I appreciate the kudos. But they should not be directed at me, but toward federal investigators.

    “On Thanksgiving and Misdeeds”

    Jake lighted the brightest flame.
Felner and UofL he did so tame.
We need to rise up and be thankful.
On this story there was seldon a lull.
Our gratitude will last a long time.
Jake touched our soul, not Belknap slime.
No care for money like the Cardinal game.
No lust for fame like Felner so lame.

    Was it justice?

Only in the very narrow, almost myopic sense that our criminal justice system allows.

Unfortunately, the only form of crime that our justice system recognized in this whole debacle is the theft of money from the federal government and the large, dumb universities that employed and idolized Felner.

Weren’t there other crimes that matter?

What got lost is the impact on the dozens of individuals who were hurt by Felner and the scumbags who aided and abetted his predatory behavior.

Where is the “justice” when our so-called system has no response to the torment that Felner and his thugs inflicted upon dozens of decent and competent faculty, staff, and students at UofHell?

Most of the pond scum in the College of Ed who supported Felner and facilitated his assaults on faculty, staff and students are still there.

But, they have been “unmasked” and discredited.

The cretins who hired him and provided organizational support for his predations are still entrenched in Grawemeyer Hall mismanaging the University.

But they have been unmasked and discredited.

And the pitiful power elite in the state and community who hired Ramsey and prop up his cartoonish “leadership” of the University are still entrenched in the Board of Trustees, Council on Postsecondary Education, and the state bureaucracies in Frankfurt.

But they, too, have been unmasked and discredited.

Perhaps Felner’s sentence does not meet the definition of “justice” Socrates offered in The Republic, but I’ll take it.

It is a beautiful spring day and I have a huge smile on my face.

Felner lost. I won. Life is good.

“Plato Peers into the Belknap Abyss”

Indigo, very nicely said. You may recall that Plato warned about the heavy price of indifference. It often causes us to be ruled by evil people like those that inhabit Grawemeyer Hall. They are afraid of the light of truth; they still stumble around in their cave. The all-consuming passion for money seems to be the main source of their stupidity.

  • 7 Curious // May 17, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Thanks, Jake. You deserve a lot of credit if not all of it. Justice failed again here. This guy deserved 63 years in jail, not 63 months. I guess, good attorneys do make the difference. What a mockery!
What about those who helped Felner to make others lives miserable or destroyed them? These folks are without any conscience. When SS, KK, RR, and many more are going to pay for their evil acts? I doubt if they ever will. What about those Felnerites who are making huge salaries, but are totally incompetent. Just look at the publication record of these people. What a disgrace! Sorry, but it will take much longer time before this house is cleaned. May be never. SS, JP, BB, KK keep on making good money, you won.

    Jake,

From thousands of miles away even I know that you latched on to this story when others were either ignoring it or saying there was no story. And you never let go.

Humble is good, Jake. But it’s ok to take a bow, too!!!

Thanks Jake from a “we be”, aka a lifer, at UofL. I am both an Alumnus & Faculty member; you are a true hero…..
It’s to your credit that you let others sit there & take all the applause….
The “big score keeper in the sky” rates you quite highly here IMHO….
I see a lot of people on here whose writings are far more profound than I could ever be. So I truly enjoy reading Jake’s stuff as well as the posters on here…..
At times I wonder what y’all look like & do for a living. Maybe we should have a luncheon or something to say thanks to Jake–wear name tags w/nom de plume…..
Again thanks Jake, USA needs more people like you…

PS we do not always agree. For example I will not vote for Jack Conway…

  • 11 Thankful at UWP // May 17, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Thanks a lot, Jake. Just thinking about the damage this slimeball might have created at UWP makes me cringe!

  • 12 Bwana // May 17, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Bye bye Bobby. Let’s just hope that 63 months from now some university doesn’t decide that Felner’s a rehabilitated man and worth taking a risk on.

The back story to the UL story is all about the failure of university after university to do their due diligence before hiring him, and the failure of university after university to handle the problems head on that cropped up at every stop he made, and then passing him off to the next victim with nary a warning.

This whole episode speaks very poorly of administrators in higher education.

  • 13 jake // May 17, 2010 at 5:43 pm

I think everyone should chip in and buy THIS (Warning: Do NOT click if you’re at work – it’s a painting featured on Regretsy) because it is awesome.

  • 14 jake // May 17, 2010 at 5:44 pm

As a gift for Felner, of course.

  • 15 Novena // May 17, 2010 at 6:36 pm

    “Sweet Home Alabama”

One source has it that RF will be imprisoned in Alabama. Poetic justice. Bobby hated life in Auburn, AL, complaining that he’d never go back to the Deep South. Perhaps he’ll be eatin’ wormy grits, crusty hog jowls, and slimy okra after all. His biggest possible treat: a motley assortment of big, bad Bubbas with scads of tattoos and bull whips.

  • 16 Novena // May 17, 2010 at 6:57 pm

“PR for Card Birds Is for the Birds”

Mark Herbert appears to have been a better journalist than he is a PR-man for UofL. His reaction to the Felner sentencing: We’ve “moved past” this episode and “life goes on at UofL.” Right, Mark, no big deal. Bidness as usual at Belknap. Tell that to all the faculty, staff, and student victims–and the poor kids in West Louisville who were left behind educationally from all that stolen grant money.

  • 17 Novena // May 17, 2010 at 7:34 pm

“And What about the CEHD Dean Search?”

Rumors swirl that it is a failed search. Perhaps the honchos couldn’t find the “rainmaker” grants person they wanted? After all, word was they sought an “uncorrupted” Felner type. Do they ever learn?

  • 18 Disgusted // May 17, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Jake– Good job on the coverage. Since I now live far away … I was able to keep up with this story. While I am happy that Bobby will spend some much deserved time in jail…. I too wonder about all of his little “yes men/women” who still get to be in any kind of power at UL. I do hope they all get what they deserve in the end (and they know who they are!) Good luck in jail Bobby— you will need it. Please be sure to tell us if you cell mate becomes your latest love interest ;-)

  • 19 J // May 18, 2010 at 8:26 am

provost and president should also be sentenced for turning their heads and ignoring their employees who suffered and lost jobs because of this thief!!

  • 20 Novena // May 18, 2010 at 8:53 am

    “Lawyer Cox’s Plaintive Predictions”

In one interview, Cox stated that Felner will be a model prisoner and not have to serve his full time. (I thought that the five years was mandatory on federal sentencing.) He also said that RF was apologetic (he has not yet apologized publicly for any dastardly misdeed). And he invoked RF’s recent bout with alcoholism. Lawyer Cox, will he find Jeeezusss next?

  • 21 Bob // May 18, 2010 at 11:33 am

Ditto to Indio’s comment. Exactly correct.

The CJ reports that Felner was subdued at sentencing. Don’t they get it even yet? The guy has confessed to and been convicted of being a con man. Did CJ expect that he would use his mask of bruising confidence and dirty language (he said it was his Yankee trait) in front of the judge who could increase his penalties? No professional con man does that. And yes, he will be a model prisoner in whatever country club he is sent to. He will still be a con man.

Catch a clue. The guy cons people–he was successful at it for at least a decade–that we know about so far.

  • 22 ed // May 18, 2010 at 1:28 pm

A criminal attorney friend told me he would have to serve 85% of a federal sentence. I’m not sure how (or if) the latest twist….an alcohol treatment program….would impact his sentence. The alcohol abuse admission sounds like nothing more than a ploy by Cox and Felner to possibly reduce his sentence.

And, what’s with Cox’s comment about hoping Blobbo does his time, comes out and is successful???? What kind of success could he remotely hope for once a background check is done? Unless, of course, someone is looking for a con man to re-make Music Man. I guess it’s also possible that he may answer an ad for an arrogant, abusive, manipulative, lying, cheating and stealing bag of shit. I hear they’re in demand these days.

“Con Artist Scene: For Very Low Pay”

ed, how about Blobby appearing in one of these films on con artists (your pick?):
    –”Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”
    –”The Color of Money”
    –”Matchstick Men”
    –”The Grifters”
    –Other (name it).

  • 24 ed // May 18, 2010 at 2:35 pm

Steve Martin and Michael Caine made “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” an absolute hoot!! I’d hate to see him ruin that. “The Color of Money” had a sad, seedy and pathetic feel to it. So, that works. (Apologies to the memory of Paul Newman).

  • 25 enough! // May 18, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I appreciate the anger and hurt and disapointment at university administrators that many contributing to this blog have expressed over the past two years. It now appears to have evolved into the worst kind of schoolyard whining and taunting! If you don’t believe he can change, what’s the point of your comments? If you want to convince others of how evil he is, I would expect by now that you have succeeded. If you have nothing else to do with your lives except go on how this person hurt you and others, I am sad for you. If you simply like to dump on someone when they are down, I hope you find another outlet once he is imprisoned!

  • 26 ed // May 18, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Thanks for the Psyche 101 lesson, enough. Obviously, you don’t know Felner. Or maybe you are Felner. Who knows? Who cares? The last thing I need is anyone…..and here I mean you….telling me ANYTHING about how I deal with this situation.

Schoolyard whining and taunting? Clearly, you haven’t been reading. This is outright gloating at the fact that the no-good rat bastard, after years of tormenting innocent, honest, hard working and dedicated people, is finally getting his due!!!

If it bothers you so much, why read it??? (Sorry, Jake). Why even come on the site???? Let me guess, you walk into strip clubs and suggest the women put their clothes on, right?

It’ll stop, enough. When we’ve had enough. I won’t speak for anyone else, but as far as I’m concerned don’t waste your time trying to take some high moral road with me.

That said, I do appreciate your concern for what you obviously feel are our vacuous lives and your fears about what will become of us once he’s safely tucked away. Thanks for that. We’ll be just fine, though. In fact, I’m considering spearheading a letter writing campaign to the little man once he’s tucked away in Bubba’s arms. Wanna join?

  • 27 Novena // May 18, 2010 at 5:33 pm

    “Assez! Basta! Bastante! Genug!”

Thanks, ed, for speaking on point for most all of us. As for enough!:
    –Count the dozens upon dozens of lives and careers destroyed (and then cry);
    –Witness the nervous breakdowns before your very eyes (and then vomit);
    –Assess the ruins of a university (and then yell);
–Count your own damn blessings from your safe, god-like perch (and continue your indifferent, sleepy ways that lead to such messes).
P.S. Indeed, are you the bastardo himself?

  • 28 ed // May 18, 2010 at 5:59 pm

Honestly, Novena, it makes my blood boil when someone who obviously never had to endure a second of Felner comes on here and tells those who have to, in effect, stop and get over it.

They simply don’t get it. By doing this, we are getting over it. And having some much deserved fun in the process.

  • 29 Novena // May 18, 2010 at 6:45 pm

    “Muchas Gracias, ed”

I hope it is not “enough” in terms of communicating with you. Perhaps Jake can set something up for us. You have become a cherished long-distance friend on a topic of mutual import. But what happened to Tirn? Hope you keep in touch on this blogspot in any case. The Felner saga has a way of sprouting crab grass all over the place when least expected.

  • 30 wc // May 18, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Thank you Jake and ed and everyone for the last two years. It’s been a wild ride, for sure. And for those of you who think Felner’s posse are still in power, look around. They are not! They have all been diminished, and some are even leaving. Their favorite for the new dean’s position did NOT get selected! It really is a new day.

  • 31 ed // May 18, 2010 at 8:32 pm

    Novena,
I’m not going anywhere for a while yet and hope you aren’t either. I’m guessing we’ll have at least a few more thoughts when they finally cart him away.

In one way, I’m glad it’s nearly over. But there have been some “cyber bonds” formed here that will be difficult to walk away from. And, yes, maybe Jake can do something. Perhaps we’ll share our stories.

I’ve been wondering about Tirn, too. Where are you, Tirn???!!!

  • 32 Tirnstie // May 19, 2010 at 12:20 am

Was out in the middle of Lake Michigan yesterday. Caught a King Salmon and eventually named it Bobby. It put up quite a fight at first and looked impressive from a distance, but then became increasingly slimy and lazy as I got a closer look. To keep this fish fresh, he got thrown into a small ice box for the rest of the outing and seemed to get cozy next to a much larger fish named Bubba.

Tonight, he was put on the grill and eaten. And while there may have been a slight aftertaste, it was gooooooooood!

  • 33 Curious // May 19, 2010 at 3:41 am

Enough, Let me guess. Are you SS? Stop preaching. You did not feel the pain, this criminal jerk inflicted upon so many of us. Just a piece of advice for you, whoever u are. Just shut up. Enough is enough of your sneaky ways, snake. People in pain are not ready to listen to your lectures yet. Just go away. If you like Felnor so much go with him to keep his company.

  • 34 Interesting // May 19, 2010 at 3:49 am

WC, are you sure? Is it really a new day? Look around the Felnerites, incompetent assistant and associate deans and chairs. SS still calling shots and making a lot of money, and many many more Felner supporters enjoying all the power. It will take a lot of time before CEHD comes out of Bobby’s deep ditches.

  • 35 ed // May 19, 2010 at 6:00 am

    Hey Tirn,

Welcome back!! Sounds like you had quite a trip. That could be my favorite fish story of all time. You might consider a future with the feds. Just like them, you reeled in the big one!!

  • 36 Novena // May 19, 2010 at 7:29 am

    “Fish Tales, Stupid Honchos”

Great to have you back, Tirn. Not so great “enough” blurb (especially if it’s SS). As to fish, it appears SW & JR are dumber than fish: the latter know a bad leader when they see one.

  • 37 ed // May 19, 2010 at 8:27 am

I don’t know…or really care….who enough is. But, somehow, that writing didn’t have an SS feel to it. It’s been a while since I’ve read his stuff, but it just didn’t seem like him. I could be wrong. But, either way, the post was as about effective as trying to stop a runaway train by putting a ribbon across the tracks.

  • 38 Novena // May 19, 2010 at 8:57 am

    “Tea & Sympathy”

Yeah, ed, the “enough!” blurb did seem a bit fishy for it to be SS. There was a tell-tale sign missing that we all used to cringe about: “Take gentle care.”

  • 39 Tirnstile // May 19, 2010 at 2:36 pm

As the fish sandwich would have been my entre of choice, had we indeed celebrated at the Irish Rover, the fishing trip was pleasantly coincidental. The next time I get my hands on a tall glass of Killian’s Red, you all + Jake will be the recipients of my first toast.

    Here’s The Chronicle’s latest coverage, if you haven’t seen…..

    http://chronicle.com/article/Former-U-of-Louisville-Dean/65603/

  • 40 Novena // May 19, 2010 at 3:19 pm

“The Free Guilty Behind the Proven Guilty”

The comments after The Chronicle article place a great deal of blame where it should be: SW & JR. There are shrill complaints about their complicity, their incompetence, their “looking-the-other-way” attitude, and their total neglect of faculty, staff, and students. It will be long after JR retires before UofL even partially regains any credibility. Resignations have been long overdue. It is a shame on the Board and the state of KY that calls for such have not been forthcoming.

  • 41 ed // May 19, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Thanks, Tirn. Appreciate the thought!! I guess a toast is second best to us all banging glasses.

How can Schroeder possibly go to trial after Blooby said they did it? What the heck kind of case could he present? Bobby, my lover, made me do it? I have to believe he’ll plead guilty before his trial. They were probably just waiting for the king pin to fall before they did anything.

  • 42 Flag // May 19, 2010 at 10:55 pm

Fully agree that the Board should have demanded resignations some time ago. But the Chronicle – hey, it’s national attention again for the good ol’ school.

  • 43 Done // May 21, 2010 at 11:42 am

Bye, bye, Bobby! You got what you deserved. Remember, you may run but you can’t hide. Are you sorry for destroying so many people’s lives? I guess not. What goes around, also it comes around. Enjoy your prison days, dean and a great scholar!
