Frankfort Really Is About To Fall Totally Apart

May 6th, 2010 · 16 Comments

Look, folks, here’s the deal: NOTHING is happening in Frankfort. Don’t get your hopes up for a budget. Rick Rand isn’t even in town this week. The Senate isn’t doing anything. The House most certainly isn’t. And the Governor’s office is struggling. Based on the inactivity I’ve seen in that town this week? The Commonwealth of Kentucky is screwed. We’re in for a rude awaking. [Just Saying]

Will Mitch McConnell’s endorsement of Trey Grayson matter? Nope, it won’t. [WaPo]

The University of Louisville has announced a record number of winners of the prestigious Fulbright award. 12. It’s kind of a big deal. [C-J]

The Herald-Leader/WKYT Kentucky Poll for the U.S. Senate was released last night. Trey Grayson is obviously still losing. And Jack Conway is trailing Daniel Mongiardo, not beating him. [Page One]

41% of Kentuckians are worried about the economy, 21% government spending. 14% are worried about health care and 8% national security. Immigration? Only 5%. Moral values? Even less. [H-L]

Seriously, is everybody going to stick their finger in Mitch McConnell’s eye? I was just kidding about it being trendy. [EITB]

What matters more? The endorsement Jim DeMint or Mitch McConnell? Just wondering. [Marcus Carey]

That mommy lady must be smoking some really good something or other these days. She says Trey Grayson’s going to win on the 18th. [Some Delusions Are Sad]

There is no way that Jim DeMint’s endorsement means more than McConnell’s. Has Paul got one meaningful endorsement from anyone in Kentucky? Bunning doesn’t count count. His endorsement has nothing to do with Paul or Grayson. A vote for Rand Paul is a clearly a vote against Mitch McConnell as Republican Party Leader.

I laugh every time I hear Rand Paul and the Tea Party clan preach about States Rights… when all of Rand’s money and endorsements are coming from OUTSIDE Kentucky!

Jake asks: What matters more? The endorsement Jim DeMint or Mitch McConnell?

My opinion is that they both matter, to the same group of voters, but for different reasons. DeMint’s endorsement adds a little (emphasis) fuel to the fire for the core of Paul’s supporters. McConnell’s endorsement ronically adds a a LOT of fuel to the fire for those same people. What do I mean? Paul’s core are people who are tired of what’s there and largely opposed to the establishment’s record and the establishment’s “picking” candidates for them. So, in the long run (days til the election), McConnell’s endorsement does more to motivate voters but not for Grayson-but for Paul. This group of voters is furious with people like McConnell and with more motivation to vote, they’ll be sure and turnout.

” A vote for Rand Paul is a clearly a vote against Mitch McConnell as Republican Party Leader.”

Your lips to God’s ears. For what it’s worth, endorsements mean little. It’s about the message. Trey has been banging the value drum (granted Rand responded) while Rand’s stump speech is about spending and the economy.

So, ultimately, Paul may thank for McConnell for helping to seal the election for him (and Grayson’s fate as loser McConnell boy-but never fear, guessing Mitch will then talk Grayson into running for governor-which is part of the problem and why he’ll lose the senate race before that).

    “Academic Kudos to Deserving Students”

Amid all the scandals, pseudo-PR, and blah-blah about athletics, it is indeed heartening that UofL has so many students earning Fulbright scholarships this year. They and their faculty mentors deserve mucho kudos. So, some darn good things can and do happen at Belknap–even while trudging through the “anonymous crap” throughout campus.

UL faculty and students earn congrats for fellowships but it has little to do with the executive suite folks (except when it’s time to bask in others’ glory). And the achievements of these students do not alibi the scandals of payoffs, secret deals, waste, and fraud going on behind The Thinker’s back and in basketball/football.

And how about those BBall Cards (Cats too, for that matter)? One of pro ball’s most productive farm teams yet. Put in your time (and spend our money) as a “student”/athlete for a year and hop that quick to the pro draft and big money. It’s all for Momma, of course, so it’s OK. Looks like a good idea (One and Gone) at UK, since the players likely would flunk out after the freshman year anyway.

Who was it who said basketball is the cesspool of college athletics? Smart guy–or maybe just a good nose.

Rand Paul is probably not able to win the general election. Furthermore, if he does win he will about as influential as his dad and Dennis Kucinich are in the House. We have a chance to elect someone that will be a major player on the national stage and people seem more interested in electing a master of rhetoric with little history of working with people to get things done. Truthers across the country have spoken and they have supported Rand Paul. We will see if Kentucky follows suit.

In two polls out within days of eachother, one has Rand Paul the better candidate against the Dems in November (Rasmussen) and the other has Grayson the better candidate (PPP). Grayson is known, while Rand Paul’s reformer views have so far been given little air time but will be attractive to independents and progressives in the general election. Hence, after the primary, Rand’s attractiveness for the general election will only increase. Grayson’s has no where to go.

Note also that Rand Paul is the one who is going to win the primary, so this is a good thing.

Rand Paul has kicked Trey Grayson’s ass!

If anyone really wants Trey Grayson as their senator, they need their head checked.

Buckmaster would be better than Grayson! And is more conservative.

folks… be nice to the g.o.p mommy lady blogger!
she took a full month to forgive ms. sarah palin!!!
she also checks ISPs on her site and has barred
all “scalawags” from an opine on the senate race!

“We Got Game, If Not Much Else”

Bob, you are spot on. The honchos merit no credit for the plethora of Fulbright fellows. As to Card B-ball, what are the latest stats on how many will graduate this year? And how many take advantage of the “post-athletic days” free tuition? Recent numbers for both seem rather low at B-ball U.

Any campaign consultant will tell you that when a trailing primary candidate starts talking about him or her being a stronger general election pick that the Hail Mary pass is in the air. Hey, it worked for Doug Flutie. What we’re looking at across the country is a change election. Choppy waters and pissed off voters always scramble the usual playbook.

jim demint just took rand paul most seriously
as mitch mcconnell put 1/2 his 2014 chips
on trey grayson to place as kentucky bill
garners third. mitch is several weeks off
for the derby just ran in full glory. is the
gambit inside the game for senator mitch
the triage-ING of the total tea-party rout??
does mitch want trey to SLIGHTLY lose?

  • 15 starryvisitor // May 6, 2010 at 11:54 am

folks… why did mcconnell hamstring bunning?
is this why jim demint in a teaparty year leaps
in after mcconnell tries to bail out grayson???
does rand paul end up being the victor because
of lucky breaks and an internal G.o.P quarrel
in D.C? so far, jack conway has yet to have a full
lead. i still think jack conway and rand paul win
on the 18th and both races are very cut and dried!

“Rand Paul is probably not able to win the general election.”

I’ve heard Charlie Cook via the New York Times say that, and that idea has been thrown around a little bit. But the fact is it has NO basis with reality at this point. If you look at every poll done in the last 5 months, none of the Democratic possibles beat him outside
the margin of error and Paul’s done better than all with Independents.
