Paul In Yet Another Campaign Finance Mess

March 17th, 2010 · 8 Comments

When will Rand Paul stop ignoring campaign finance law? When will he begin avoiding the appearance of impropriety?

Check this: Young Americans for Liberty is holding a spring break event in Kentucky this week:

This guy Austin Brenneman previously worked to coordinate spending between Rand Paul’s campaign and Young Americans for Liberty

Brenneman is now listed as the contact for YAL’s Spring Break event in Kentucky. An event that started as Rand Paul’s Spring Break in Kentucky, but subsequently changed:

Before you complain? Rand Paul’s Spring Break shenanigans were promoted on Facebook by Rand’s official 2010 group:

A group that is administered by Paul campaign manager David Adams, Matt Collins and Austin Brenneman:

Collins, et al, were then in contact with Jeff Frazee, executive director of YAL making plans to turn Rand Paul’s Spring break into “something fantastic”:

Shortly thereafter, Matt Collins made an announcement that Young Americans for Liberty would hold a spring break event during the exact same time as Rand Paul’s Spring Break:

Hardly coincidental.

What is it Rand Paul, his campaign staff and supporters do not understand about collusion with a 501 ( c ) 4 entity?

The Republican Party of Kentucky has filed FEC complaints against Democrats for far less.

What section of what code is this against?

Uh, it’s common sense for anybody paying attention to the political process to understand collusion. 501 organizations can’t spend funds or coordinate to directly support the election of or defeat of a candidate.

The FEC candidate guidebook even details the stickiness of individuals being affiliated with and soliciting on behalf of 501 groups.

Apparently the Paultards are still keen on ignoring the reality of federal elections.

Oh, David Adams! is there a weak self-aggrandizing political stunt that you are NOT a part of?

What makes you think, they don’t understand it? Now they’re showing you how easy it is to get around. So who cares?

There’s nothing illegal about a 501(c)(4) organization spending funds advocating the election of a candidate during a campaign provided it’s less than 40% of that group’s total budget. Perhaps you have it confused with a 501(c)(3).

    They can’t be in collusion.

And there’s the rub, as well, about 40% – that’s rather objective and doesn’t prevent legal hurdles. Prove to me what’s being spent where.
