TGIF! Kentucky’s Legislature Ruins Everything Nice

March 12th, 2010 · 13 Comments

Kentucky Democratic Party By-Laws Question: When did the by-laws get an update to allow party chairmen/officers to endorse candidates? Anybody know the year? Has this always been the case? Can’t remember. [Just Wondering]

Cletus Maricle says he bought votes– but 20 years ago. Who in Eastern Kentucky HASN’T bought votes? Really. [H-L]

The latest Courier-Journal/WHAS11/SurveyUSA mayoral poll for Louisville is set to appear in this Sunday’s paper, I hear. [The 'Ville Voice]

Trey Grayson is on the offense as Rand Paul leads in the U.S. Senate race. [National Journal]

Damon Thayer’s racing aid bill was approved yesterday in Senate committee. Fancy video lottery-like terminals for already-run race betting. [Blood Horse]

There’s something weird about Johnny Bell trying to save the ‘Hell is real’ billboard with legislation. Wasting taxpayer time and money on something so ridiculous speaks wonders to his character as a legislator. And the stories I’ve heard certainly don’t help. [Ryan Alessi]

Woopsiedaisy! Crit Luallen’s gonna audit some fancy Passport dealings with the University of Louisville. Now’d be a good time for Jewish Hospital Big Dog Tim Shaughnessy to step aside. [Tom Loftus]

Thank goodness the Missouri legislature is more screwed up than Kentucky’s. [KMBC]

Here’s yet another reason for Steve Beshear to veto the budget bill. FYI: Bobby Sherman got that fat raise because he made something disappear for David Williams. Lest you forget. [Beth Musgrave]

Some bored, white, Republican housewives in Louisville’s East End are feigning shock that Barack Obama would call out draft-dodger and hypocrite Mitch McConnell. [EITB]

Apparently they’re falling into line as mouthpieces for Karl Rove, Mr. Concern Troll. [Media Matters]

Seen this C-J editorial cartoon about faux conservatives David Floyd and Tim Moore? It’ll rile up the wingnuts, for sure. Meanwhile, Floyd and Moore do things like strip colon cancer bills and replace language with anti-abortion crap. All because they “care about people.” Hahaha. [Marc Murphy]

I have never known a party chairman to endorse a primary candidate, because they are not supposed to do that, until the Tim Longmeyer did this year. Longmeyer should be blasted in my opinion.
It is classless and sad that no one in the party has called him out on this. If you do not wish to follow the rules in which you are chairman of, you should step aside. But seeing no one challenge him on this is even worse.

    From the state by-laws:

No Democrat Committee governed by these By-Laws, or any Democratic Party Officer acting in his or her official capacity, shall endorse or support one Democratic candidate over another Democratic candidate in a Democratic Primary Election. No assets of the Democratic Party shall be used in a Democratic Primary Election unless they are made available equally to all Democrat Candidates in that specific primary election.

Democratic Party Officers who are candidates in a Democratic Primary Election are not prohibited from listing their party position or party office in their campaign materials. Also, this does not prevent any Democratic Party Officer from supporting or endorsing the Democrat of their choice in a primary election as long as they are not acting in an official party capacity.

Though, there’s this additional bit of information:

If any Democratic Party Officer is accused of intentional failure to comply with the Kentucky Democratic Party By-Laws or precinct, Legislative District, County or State Convention calls or caucuses, the County Democratic Executive Committee or the State Democratic Central Executive Committee, as provided below, shall hold a hearing. Should it be found by a majority vote that the officer did intentionally so fail to comply; his or her office shall be declared vacant. This paragraph shall only apply to any action taken by a Party Officer after its adoption.

“acting in his or her official capacity”

Just as long as endorsements are made on an individual basis not in an official capacity elected officials of party still possess their first amendment rights.

    James R?

Ur knowlege of Tim longmeyer and ky politics is limited. Longmeyer endorsed Obama 08, Miller then beshear and I think Conway in 07. All with contested primaries. U all are just being “whinny ass Titty babies. It seems Tim is just good at picking winners. Get over it he did it as a individual not as chairman of the Jefferson county party

Tim Longmeyer didn’t endorse Barack Obama. But he wasn’t quiet about supporting him.

Jonathan Miller wasn’t party chair, Jennifer Moore was. Beshear and Conway weren’t party chairs or party officers.

It’s Whiny Ass Titty Baby – one “N” – and it IS rare and frowned upon for a party chairman to endorse in a primary.

There are 119 other County Chairman outside of Jefferson (Breaking news)….and most of them favor a candidate in the primary, in fact, most favor the Lt Gov over your most favored scion of privilege, Jack Sprat…

Supporting and endorsing are different beasts.

I wouldn’t understand that because I’ve never been outside Louisville, right? Don’t travel the state 24/7 or anything. And don’t spend most of my time in the mountains.

That said – I’d imagine most county chair people – not all are men – wouldn’t be supportive of Lt. Dan if they actually knew him. He may work hard shaking hands and he may really want the job… but none of that changes the fact that he’s a bigot. Full-on gay panic courtesy Jim Bunning c. 2004. (FYI: telling George Stinson that you’re ‘on record’ supporting fairness after creating SB245 won’t cut it, sweetie) None of that changes the fact that he treated Francene like trash, with complete and utter disrespect.

P.S. And none of that changes the fact that Jack Conway’s campaign is apparently never going to try defining Lt. Dan. Meaning Rand Paul will be the next U.S. Senator from Kentucky.

Did Conway’s campaign make any news today? And why does his staff allow his opponent’s supporter’s attacks to remain unchallenged on KY’s most-read political blog? I’m sure they can tell us exactly how many days remain until the Derby is over but unfortunately that’s not enough time to grow a pair.

  • 10 jake // Mar 12, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Some day I’ll get bored (let’s face it – boring people get bored) and stop defending him.

Then I bet they’ll chime in.

“P.S. And none of that changes the fact that Jack Conway’s campaign is apparently never going to try defining Lt. Dan. Meaning Rand Paul will be the next U.S. Senator from Kentucky.”

…. we can only hope …

Sorry u did not follow. Longmeyer endorsed miller for gov07 and then beshear07 and I believe conway07. I don’t believe it matters if public or just openly. If it did I would be complaining about Charlie Moore backing Conway.

:-) so stop being a whinnny titty baby:-)

  • 13 jake // Mar 12, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Charlie Moore could endorse Daniel and I wouldn’t care.

    He’s simply… part of the non-existent KDP.
