David Williams On Casino Gambling

February 25th, 2010 · 6 Comments

State Senate President David Williams recently sat down for an interview with WHAS11′s Joe Arnold. In the second half of that interview, the two discussed casino gambling and Williams, well, see for yourself:

One of the things said about Williams is “hypocrite,” because the crusader against expanded gambling was known himself for frequenting casinos.

“I have been to casinos in the past,” Williams volunteered, “but I will tell you that I failed at that juncture in my life to connect the unbridled greed that these companies have.  And I will tell you that I haven’t been to a casino in a long time.

“

How long has it been?

”

A year, two years, a couple years at least, Williams said.

Does David Williams think this is the end of this discussion?

Because it’s not.

It doesn’t matter if he has gambled ever or not. What matters is the Republican leaders are stopping a proposal that helps KY businesses compete against businesses in other states that have been given the tools to prosper and create jobs.

I’ve got no problems with David Williams, or anyone else, gambling elsewhere and wanting to keep casinos out of Kentucky. Just as if I have no problems with anyone who lives in a dry county not wanting alcohol sales in their home county, even if that person drinks and buys alcohol where it is legally sold. I still say that if the horse people need a gimmick like casino gambling to stay in business, they are in trouble and need to re-examine their business model and practices so as to make horse racing profitable without the need for casinos.

There is no question that David Williams is a tool. But “whose tool” is the important question.

If we can find the answer to that question, then the rest of the puzzle will fall into place.

Let’s say that tomorrow David Williams is “caught” 60 Minutes style in a casino. What then? So we all stand around crying out HYPOCRITE… neener neener neener…caught you Bible Boy? If hypocrisy is the tribute paid virtue by vice, what was it when Greg Stumbo plainly said that he opposes casinos in Floyd County because his constituents are too poor to gamble? As a Uof L boy (like Williams) Greg knows damn good and well that a lot of poor folks live cheek to jowl with the Churchill Downs complex, which would mean what exactly? Are we supposed to wash our brains of memory that Steve Beshear promised a people’s vote on this issue and that during that campaign he even talked of non-track venues? My point is, watching all this Williams bashing because the Governor and the casino crowd fucked up is similar to Obama crying about mean Republicans when he has majority numbers most Presidents can only dream about. Put it on the ballot and I’ll vote yes. In the meantime this shit is getting boring.

You can enjoy casino gambling and still think having casinos in your city/county/district/state is bad public policy. I live in a dry county and even though I might drink a beer every now and then, I don’t necessarily want it sold here. I don’t mind going to a nearby wet county or picking up a six-pack when I am in Lexington.
