Really, what is up with Julian Carroll? Is he stuck in the 1970s?
Here he is on CNN:

That’s right. Julian said, “I could care less what they want!” and “If you don’t like it, move to another country!”
All that foaming at the mouth over independents wanting the right to vote openly in primary elections.
What a crazy and embarrassing old man. He should be ashamed. Guess he really is stuck in the Bluegrass Conspiracy days. Julian’s niece, Linda, needs to threaten to put him in a home, I think. Posthaste. Cause he is clearly in no state to represent Kentucky voters in Frankfort.
Julian Carroll is why Kentucky can’t have nice things.

Don’t you just love Julian’s runaway debate style? Of course, that sumbitch independent being seven foot tall and 400 pounds might have influenced Julian’s tactics. Henry Vance would have just had someone shoot the giant.

That should have come with a ‘pee alert’.
Wow…About the only thing I can say positive about Carroll is that he’s NOT my senator.
I guess somewhere along the way someone forgot to tell Jullian Carroll that we don’t have a democracy in the United States…it’s a republic.

What an embarrassment for Kentucky! Democracy in action alright.

For once Jake, we heartily agree on something. And my blog had it before yours. Just saying.

In Massachusetts, “Unenrolled”–independent– voters can vote in which-ever primary they wish . In fact in MA “Unenrolled” outnumbers both Democrats and Republicans combined–and has since 1948, except for a few years in the 1960s-1970s.

Jonathan: I wrote the story at 9:10 A.M. after receiving the heads-up that it was live and scheduled it for 14:00 during a peak traffic period to make sure it got in front of as many eyes as possible.
But glad to see others jumping on it!

Hell you guys should have witnessed it live.
What they didn’t show Carroll saying in the interview on air was just as damning as what they did.
This guy is a nutjob.

Jake,
I have forwarded this to every newspaper on this list: http://www.usnpl.com/kynews.php
and television station in the state that I can think of.

If I file to run for elected office as a Republican or as a Democrat I have to sign an affidavit stating I adhere to the principals of that party. Why in hell should someone who does not adhere to any parties principals have any say in a PARTISAN POLITICAL PARTY’S nominee.
If he really thinks the two party system in unfair, then make all political parties illegal and make every race non-partisan.

My point isn’t that independents should be allowed to vote in a primary… my point is that Julian Carroll is fucking embarrassing.
11 T // Feb 4, 2010 at 8:04 pm
He is embarrassing but instead of everyone acting like a fool just like him, send him an email:
Julian.Carroll@lrc.ky.gov
Or call the legislative line and leave him a message letting him know your displeasure… it doesn’t matter if you’re not in his district.
Legislative Message Line 1-800-372-7181
He represents my hometown and I’ve already let him know.

You know, I love my house. I love my neighborhood. What I don’t love is that my state senator is this old bag of insanity.

IJS…
[PARTISAN POLITICAL PARTY]
No problem!
You and your partisan political party buddies can just pay for your own candidate selection process instead of being the recipient of your own form of corporate/party welfare, in the form of taxpayer funded primaries.

Gov Carroll is my state senator and a proud democrat.
Do you think Repubs and David Williams would have voted for it if it was going to benefit Democrats. Not in a New York minute.
If the repubs and some of you wanted independents to vote so badly, where have you and your pronouncements been in the recent past?
I’m glad a politician, any politician, stood up for what he believes in. Most are fence straddlers.
Thank you Gov. Carroll for standing up for the Democratic Party. I’m glad a politician has the fortitude to do so.
I not only called the legislative line, I sent an email saying thanks to Gov Carroll

Thunder Storm, I strongly disagree…..
I’ve been a registered Democrat and have been since I was able to vote. Almost my entire family are Democrats. I’m sick and tired of all this partisan bullshit.
Julian Carroll should have had the decency to let Mike Lewis discuss his point of view; even if he disagreed. I can appreciate the fact that Senator Carroll has strong beliefs but he needs to show a little respect.
It’s an embarrassment to this state and highlights why people are fed up with the two party system!
Nothing is getting done! Democrats and Republicans are responsible for this. So I throw my support to independents because someone needs to be the tie breaker. I’m considering of becoming one myself in protest.
I’m not moving to another country!

Julian Carroll is a fine gentleman. I withhold judgement on this video clip as it is obvious that these are snippets of a much longer video, edited for sensationalism. The man wouldn’t just fly off the handle without provocation.
17 jake // Feb 5, 2010 at 10:36 am
HAHAHA!
Anybody who has ever met Julian knows he’s prone to fly off the bat and say some crazy shit. That’s just how he is.
This video was not edited for sensationalism. It was actually edited to make him appear more sane, according to the producers I spoke with.

Thank goodness CNN didn’t mention he was once the governor.
19 Jonathan // Feb 5, 2010 at 11:04 am
Jake, I posted for the same reasons on 9:00AM.

I agree that Carroll has acted like an ass unnecessarily, but as an independent, the more I think about this proposal, the more I dislike it. The idea that independents are organizing as a group (very party-like) and pushing to intervene in party decisions doesn’t work for me.
To me, the definition of an independent is someone who eschews organization and party, and decides issues by their own merits, whether their particular positions are seen as liberal, centrist or conservative.
Now, the idea of nonpartisan elections sounds better, and in my view, is more in line with the Founders’ wishes. They hated factionalism. That’s something I could get behind.
