Oh man. Couldn’t make this up if I tried:
Under an ordinance proposed by Mayor Jim Newberry, city-registered lobbyists would be prohibited from fund-raising or making a campaign contribution to a candidate running for city office.
Two days after Newberry unveiled the ordinance, David Whitehouse, a lobbyist registered in Frankfort, had a fund-raiser that brought in $10,000 for Newberry’s mayoral campaign. Whitehouse and his wife, Cindy, have each contributed $1,000, the individual maximum for the primary campaign. Whitehouse said he is a longtime friend of Newberry’s.
How did Newberry explain it all away? He said it was legal under the current rules. Really. Proposing ethics and campaign finance rules while knowingly doing the exact thing you’re preaching against.
Hahaha. This is campaign humor we can believe in.
Schadenfreude.
Oh, not only is Jim Newberry holding fundraisers with lobbyists? His campaign manager, Mark Riddle, is a registered lobbyist in Frankfort. He even owes his 2006 victory to Riddle, who was also his campaign manager at the time. A lobbyist got him elected. A lobbyist is running his re-election campaign. And lobbyists are holding fundraisers for him.
Mark isn’t a bad guy, but this just typical Newberry hypocrisy.
