BREAKING! Lt. Dan Doesn’t Care For Loud TV!

December 16th, 2009 · 5 Comments

Hahaha, oh god, the hilarity.

Lt. Dan can’t speak up about women’s rights or anything important like legitimate health care reform, but he can issue an urgent press release about “annoying TV commercials.” Seriously. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Check it:

Mongiardo Supports Senate Bill to Lower Volume of Annoying TV Commercials

TV Ads Louder Than Programs Real Irritant to Viewers

Saying “televisions ads that blare ads noticeably louder than programs are a real annoyance to viewers,” Lt. Governor and U.S. Senate Candidate Daniel Mongiardo today announced his support of the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act which passed the House by voice vote yesterday. The CALM Act was introduced in the Senate last week by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and co-sponsored by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY).  The CALM Act would grant the Federal Communications Commission the authority to enforce volume standards on televised advertising so that television ads air at the same volume as surrounding programs.

“Parents, seniors, those who watch televisions are daily assaulted by annoying ads that blare at higher volumes than the surrounding programs. Under this bill, viewers will be relieved of the annoyance of constantly changing volumes between regular TV programming and TV ads,” Mongiardo said.  “TV watching should be an enjoyable experience, not one filled with always grabbing the remote to adjust your TV volume to deal with ads that blare.”

“While the commercials are designed to grab your attention they end up creating more of a disturbance.  The CALM Act will end this practice through the creation of standards that prevent excessive loudness and give the FCC the power to finally enforce these standards,” Mongiardo added.??

Because television commercials are clearly the most important issue facing this Commonwealth and this country.

HAHAHAHA.

Thank heaven for DVR. I refuse to watch anything in ‘real’ time. Bloop right through those loud commercials.

Here it is 6:44 pm and Wolf Blitzer’s Situation Room on CNN is getting ready to do a story on the “Loud Commercial” bill

Must be important enough for a Bill to be considered and must be important enough for CNN to do a story on it.

Several viewers recalled the same little importance people assigned with those annoying telemarketer calls all hours of the night.

Now …. they are glad those are gone. I’ll be glad when those commercials are gone too!

It’s stupid, granted, but this is probably the best legislation I’ve seen that has a chance to pass in the last few months. As someone who falls sleep to the TV (old habit, very hard to break), with a partner who sleeps lightly – this is seriously annoying. If the sound is up just high enough to hear the show, it’ll cut to commercial and suddenly be blaring.

Now of course I wish we had a senate who could deliver a real healthcare reform bill. But if not, maybe they’ll at least get rid of my pet peeve.
