It’s Veterans Day.

Patriots Peace Memorial – Louisville

So take five minutes that you would otherwise spend stuffing your face or complaining about something and thank a veteran.

I took a few minutes to pull into Zachery Taylor Cemetery this morning to reflect on the rows of white tombstones and express my appreciation to those who lie there.

I would suggest taking a minute or two to do the same if you are driving down Brownsboro Road of near Cave Hill this afternoon.

    “To Mark & E”

Thanks to you both for remembering. I have a close relative who has twice been deployed in the Middle East. We forget that only about 1% of America is directly involved with both wars. We also forget that there would be no wars if we were forced to have a draft.
P.S. UofL and UK football and basketball games are doubtless more thought about than our current and past veterans. A sad commentary.

    Thank you Novena.

As a part time civil war historian who has consulted at Antietam Battleground in Sharpsburg, MD, I hope our leaders do what is right by your relative in the military, and all our people who are in harms way.

In September of 1862, after 28,000+ casualties were incurred in a single day at Antietam, General George McClellan was overly cautious and while waiting for reinforcements, allowed Lee’s vastly outnumbered Army of Northern Virginia to escape over the Potomac River back into the safety of his home state. His hesitancy helped the war continue for another 3 years with hundreds of thousands of our young and brightest being killed and wounded.

Please pardon my soapbox moment, but that painful lessen should be remembered today. Bush unfortunately showed us, and Obama should realize that half-ass measures result in more death and destruction. I hope our future leadership will make a quick decision to either commit totally or get our loved ones the hell out of harms way, and bring them back.

The veterans we honor today are some of the most valuable resources we as a country possess. They should be treated as such. I am humbled by their sacrifice and look at them with great pride.

My dad is a disabled vet. He lost a leg in Korea. He is my hero. Every day is Vets Day to me.

    For Southerners, you are correct.
