Crude Oil Spill in Eastern Kentucky

November 10th, 2009 · No Comments

A crude oil spill Friday resulted in 4,200 gallons of the stuff spreading about Elliott County. The oil came from Cornerstone Minerals’ Stafford Heirs No. 1 lease to the facility’s Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure basin, to a drain pipe and eventually into a tributary of Big Caney Creek. Nearly one-half mile of the stream was impacted.

Weavertown Environmental Group and Hefner Environmental are on-site assisting with cleanup. In addition to the construction of a small, earthen overflow dam, 5,000 gallons of liquids have been recovered and 220 tons of contaminated soil has been excavated.

Can’t wait to see what the ongoing investigation reveals. But events like this are never good news for the environment.
