Mark H, I surely hope that most of those stocking up are doing so for rational purposes as you claim. If any of it is for nefarious purposes, I would just remind those hopefully few individuals that the government will always have greater firepower, no matter how much you stockpile.

The reason many people are stocking up on ammunition is that there is a high likelihood that this administration is going to tax the living hell out of it under the guise of counteracting medical costs associated with gun violence. Obama isn't going to ban guns, but just like tobacco taxes, he certainly would be willing to place a huge tax on them as a way reducing their affordability while raising revenue.

The Congress has re-opened the investigation into estimating the cost of gun violence on the medical system after being ceased over 25 years ago. I don't think it is unreasonable to suspect that the taxes on guns and ammunition are going to escalate dramatically under this administration. Many people, not all, are hedging against those potential cost increases by stocking up on the consumable ammunition.

Now I am sure there are some who think the world is going to melt down and they are stocking up for the end of the society, but I think the majority are trying to insulate themselves from higher costs down the road.
