Cornyn says he won’t spend money in contested primaries.

“We will not spend money in a contested primary,” Sen. John Cornyn, the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told ABC News in a telephone interview today.

“There’s no incentive for us to weigh in,” said Cornyn, R-Texas. “We have to look at our resources. . . . We’re not going to throw money into a [primary] race leading up to the election.”

Cornyn said the NRSC is only endorsing in races where — like in Crist’s case — the candidate specifically requests its stamp of approval. He said that — notwithstanding any endorsements — his group would even offer advice on hiring and strategy to GOP challengers, like Rubio, who haven’t been endorsed.

Asked what endorsements mean, then, Cornyn said some candidates may want the backing to help line up support and financing. Beyond that, however, he said NRSC endorsements won’t mean very much in practice.

Does this mean he won’t be spending money to support Trey Grayson in Kentucky?

If the big dogs aren’t spending money on Trey Grayson, as Cornyn says, then he can kiss his candidacy goodbye.

I smell a hot mess in the Republican primary.

Nah, that’s just a coded message. They’ll still be telling the K Street crowd to write “Grayson” on the check ( if they can get them to now that the bet doesn’t look so good). They’re just saying now they won’t be doing it with black tie affairs from now on like they did in September.

Why would the NRSC get involved in a primary for an open seat, anyway? I can see trying to keep an incumbent in office (now just where will you guys use the money you’d earmarked for Specter vs. Toomey in the primary?) but an open seat? Keep your powder dry for the general election.

The NRSC has been infiltrated with leadership that thinks the main reason Republicans lost is that we’re not big enough Liberals on economic issues, thus they feel compelled to try and stack the deck for guys like Crist in FL and Grayson over a Conservative.
