Oh Snap Monday! It’s Already Labor Day

September 7th, 2009 · 11 Comments

And since it’s Labor Day, we won’t be publishing much here on the internets. Mostly because I’ll be traveling around the country and such after spending several days in Washington, D.C.

There are 44 coal ash ponds in Kentucky. No wonder we’re all sick. [C-J]

Mitch McConnell is the last person who should be concerned about costs. Mr. Porker wastes billions in Kentucky every year. [Bowling Green Daily News]

Keeping God in Kentucky homeland security law may be the most ridiculous thing yet. [Bluegrass Politics]

This is why Jerry Abramson’s administration is a total mess. Appealing a decision to pay firefighters. Of all people. [C-J]

Reps. Jim Wayne and Darryl Owens are right. It’s ridiculous to keep kids from watching Barack Obama’s speech. [H-L]

No, the “tea party” isn’t non-partisan. Kudos to Democrats for finally speaking up. [Joe Gerth]

We’re sorry to hear that Rand Paul was hospitalized and we will refrain from cracking any jokes. [Joe Arnold]

Nice to know Rand got the treatment he needed to recover. Wish he thought that was something all Americans deserve.

    “God, Country & KY”

So, Kentuckians can’t be safe without a law saying Almighty God protects us? I never would have thought of that–glad our Legislature did. But is He asleep in Iraq and Afghanistan? Or do we need to send more Kentuckians over there to insure His protection? And what about His watching over the rest of the states of our nation? Should they be excluded from such protection? Maybe make it a federal law for all.

I am shocked…SHOCKED that the local leadership of the President’s party does not endorse opposition to the party line.

Next, there will be reports that the GOP did not endorse any anti-war protests prior to this year. If, in fact, this turns out to be true…I…I…I just don’t know what I’ll do.

    “Into the Ash Bin Again”

Also glad that our legislature and federal Congressmen from KY are keeping such a protective, watchful eye on the coal ash problem. Just another way they are insuring we’re at the top of the heap in another awfully dangerous category. Maybe we could call on Him for protection there, too–and forget the state engineering inspectors and payoffs to big power companies?

    Best…
Rand paid for the treatment he needed, which means that by default he has also paid for the treatment many others needed…through taxes and premiums.
What have you done for your fellow man’s health today?

  • 6 bestmid // Sep 7, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Not just today, E, but all my life I’ve worked for wellness initiatives, professionally and as a volunteer and not just to benefit myself.
My point about Rand is, he’s never had a day without the emotional security of knowing he could access health care if needed. All of us are not that fortunate and for some of us, it’s through no fault of ours and we are working to be able to reach that goal. I personally believe that the rising tide should lift all boats. If that makes me whatever label you want to put on that point of view, just know that the label is yours, not mine. I have to live with myself, first of all, and I am happier as a tolerant, generous, liberal.
The insurance premiums Rand pays contribute to no one’s treatment than his and the taxes he pays represent an infinitesimal fraction of even state health care costs. You give him far too much credit.

    “High Priest of Nothingness”

Mitch’s health care “plan”: Do nothing for the average American. What else is new? Tinker with things around the edges, like insurance incentives for not smoking and being fat like Mitch, cut down on lawsuits (as the UofL fails to do), and sit with Empress Elaine while continuing to watch the grass grow. Ordinary folks can always count on KY’s High Priest of Politics to do nothing and be nothing in our behalf (unless you live in Oldham County).

Please don’t think the decision to appeal the firefighters ruling grows from any hostility toward them. Its an economic decision. City Hall has known from Day 1 they would have to pay up eventually. But why not let the contract attys make some money first?
After all, there is no shame in losing the case when you’re making a million dollars on it – the C-J story didn’t even include the name of the lawyer who has been losing this case for years now. And no one ever questions the officials who make the decision to go to court. So everyone is happy, even the tax payers who have no idea what’s going on.

    Best,
Why would you say Rand doesn’t think that’s something all Americans deserve?
Actually he has some ‘non-statist’ free-er market ideas for improving access to health care, as well as incentivising physicians and providers to work with the less financially secure.
Then again…if you gave him that credit…you wouldn’t be able to make broad baseless statements.
All ‘paying customers’ for healthcare/health insurance by virtue of the fact they DO pay…are helping to defray the costs/losses incurred for those who do not or cannot pay.

The sad fact is, E, that Rand Paul is so right-wing he doesn’t even know for sure if President Obama is a citizen of the United States. How can he expect to be taken seriously on any topic if he doesn’t live in the real world? Even Mitch McConnell gets that one right! But beyond that, I give Rand Paul no credit because he’s done nothing yet to deserve credit. Making statements and having positions and raising money on your father’s name does not imply accomplishment. I’ve read all about Rand Paul and in addition to not being a supporter of a public option on health care (seems like the competition would appeal to a so-called free marketer) he marks himself as incapable of working within the public framework in any respect. For example, he rejects public education in favor of closed-minded home schools. Rand Paul is just not living in the world most of us live in, and it shows.

    “Questions for KY’s High Priest”

Mitch, please respond ASAP when yu return from your protected, handpicked, out-of-state “town halls” on health care:
    (1) Why your silence on Bush’s massive deficit spending–when you were majority leader?
    (2) Why your silence on Iraq war spending–money which experts assess could have provided health-care coverage for all Americans?
    (3) You want everyone treated the same? Could the rest of us have the same coverage as you and Empress Elaine?
    (4) You volunteered to broker a deal for a health-care commisison? Even more delays and B.S. as you and the Empress go to Mayo any time you please. Give us a break, High Priest.
