Special State Senate Election: 18th District

August 25th, 2009 · 19 Comments

Stick around.

We’ll have results as they come in.

UPDATE: This may not be a sign of things to come, but I’m hearing from tons of Republicans who voted for Robin Webb. (I don’t think the early numbers from Robertson that have her ahead mean anything at this point)

Seems the GOP split on the campaign strategy. Mitch McConnell and Geoff Davis wanted to tie Robin to Barack obama and Nancy Pelosi. David Williams apparently/allegedly wanted to attack her for her stance on expanded gambling.

UPDATE 2: Really, ugh. Just go here to follow the results. I’m not gonna lie to you. I need to go to Kroger in the worst way. I’ve barely been here, it seems, for two weeks and need food like mad.

FINAL UPDATE:

Wow. 23.6% turnout. 18,039 votes cast.

  • Robin Webb: 8,684
  • Jack Ditty: 8,402
  • Guy Gibbons Jr: 953

Here’s Governor Steve Beshear’s Statement:

“I want to congratulate Robin Webb on winning a hard-fought, hard-run campaign. I look forward to serving with Robin as we work together on the significant challenges confronting our Commonwealth. The people of the 18th Senate District have spoken with one voice: They want someone who will help create good jobs, ensure quality schools and help provide affordable health care. And I believe they want someone who will work with me in a bi-partisan fashion to move our state forward. Now, the election is over. The real work of representing Kentucky must continue. I’m glad to have Robin as my partner in work ahead.”

Congratulations to Senator Robin Webb.

Is this Senate district considered Democrat or Republican? How do the Counties lean in registration. Does anyone know?

  • 2 jake // Aug 25, 2009 at 7:22 pm

    Heavily Democratic.

    Democratic that votes Republican.

Seems to me tying any opponenet to Obama right now would be good strategy. With the health care thing and all.

It’s a bit outlandish to tie Obama to Robin Webb…I doubt if they have ever been in the same zip code at the same time. People understand a difference between the two.

Ditty has won Bracken and Lewis now…up by just over 120 votes.

Ditty wins Mason by 66…up to Carter and Greenup now…Ditty has 3040 total votes, Webb with 2842.

    Where does each live?

  • 7 Faye // Aug 25, 2009 at 7:53 pm

    Webb wins.

    Congrats to Senator Robin.

Not sure about Ditty, but Webb is from Carter County. Greenup came in big for Ditty…Webb has to win Carter by 829 votes or it’s a Ditty victory.

Ditty currently leads, 50.3% to 43.8% for Webb with Independent Guy Gibbons picking up the slack. 6407-5579-754

And the Governor’s horse wins by a nose. Scary close against a total political newcomer but youse takes em anyway youse gets em. Can’t wait for the 527 numbers.

Webb won Carter by 1000+. It’s over.

  • 11 Steve // Aug 25, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Well, now that it’s officially over, let the games begin. Has Ditty demanded a recount yet?

  • 12 Steve // Aug 25, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Correction: It’s not official yet. Trey Grayson reportedly will certify the results on Friday.

Jake, if you’ve got the cantaloupe, I’ve got the Bacardi.

Charlie Borders should be taken out and … well, I hate to threaten violence but he certainly did his party and his convictions and his belief system no favors.

Dan Kelly, hope you’re paying attention. If you want to be a judge, run for the office, don’t take an appointment and force a special election.

Not a damn cantaloupe in the whole joint. Not even the over-priced organic kind!

    Congrats to Robin!

Maybe Robin can now address the pension shortfall so we can afford good schools and quality health care. How about it Charlie Borders or Joe Barrows or long long list of Frankfort whores?

  • 16 Ray Re // Aug 25, 2009 at 9:50 pm

BTW Dan Kelly will make a great judge and no one will be able to see his magic underwear under the robes. Neat.

maybe republicans can run anne northup and bill nighbert for seats in the legislature…afterall, just few years or so ago the “big” republicans thought they were just so great. hilarious! where are they now?

  • 18 Terri // Aug 25, 2009 at 11:06 pm

I think turnout was predicted at 10%, so this is great turnout, considering. Congrats to Webb!

FYI – The RPK DID tie Webb to Obama’s health care reform. They used all the old “fear” tricks, too. They played the soft-on-crime, anti-police, pro-abortion, anti ten commandments, pro-gambling, “she’s NOT one of us” cards, too. Don’t know why they held back on the gun or gay cards. Maybe William’s bag-o-tricks just won’t work anymore.
