Thursday Afternoon Dept of Happy Birthdays

August 13th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Yeah, so, we, uh, maybe disappeared for the entire afternoon or whatever. Maybe. So. Hope you enjoyed the day. Back at em tomorrow.

It’s our Second Birthday and the Golden B.S. Award winners have been announced! [Page One]

Dear Newspaper Folks: Why no mention of Rick Pitino’s crazy 9/11 excuse? Or that his wife hasn’t lived in Louisville in probably years? And quoting a bigot? Really? Rather interesting that Pitino told potential players that things would turn ugly but continued to mislead the rest of the University of Louisville and the general public. [Andy Wolfson, Peter Smith, C.L. Brown & Nancy Rodriguez]

Home sales may be “up” but July marked the third time in five months where a new record was set for foreclosures. This economy is awesome! [Reuters]

Spotted on Page A9 of the Courier-Journal: A full-page advertisement for a motivational business seminar with the likes of Colin Powell, Terry Bradshaw and… dun dun dun… Rick Pitino! Topics Pitino will be covering include “Principles for Stellar Performance” and “How to Turn Your Setbacks into Comebacks.” Hahahaha! [Spotted in the Paper]

What is it with billionaires threatening a class war if they’re forced to pay the same tax rates as janitors? [David Sirota]

Can health care reform make your meemaw’s doctor less condescending? We consulted known health care expert Jim Bunning and he says meemaw will die of cancer in 9 months, so it doesn’t matter. He also said that Joe Gerth is so mean and is one of the little green men. [Double X]

While no one in their right mind believes these ridiculous “town halls” on health care accomplish jack squat, Ben Chandler is a huge puss for tucking tail and running. [Advocate-Messenger]

Mitch McConnell is an expert on Canadian health care. [Ronnie Ellis]

God hath smited Beattyville for worshiping the gat danged woolly worm (or maybe for Bob Stivers) and has burned an entire city block. [H-L]

We tend to agree that Scott Jennings was merely/probably following orders from Karl Rove. [Marcus Carey]

Mitch McConnell is just a bitter little man who is all shriveled up and hateful. [MSNBC]

    “Uniting Two Disparate Threads”

The connections between Mitch & Rick: Being apologetic when caught with no emperor’s clothes; talking a good game, petering out when it counts; speaking to acquire millions at company banquets, acting like stale penny candy (I feel the need to judge only so much) when representing a “stellar” image for our city and state.

Stivers isn’t from Beattyville, he’s from Manchester, although he does represent Lee County in the Senate.

This isn’t Beattyville’s first big fire. In 1977 a gasoline truck lost control coming down the old hill into town and crashed, it sent a river of burning gasoline down the street and more than half a dozen people got killed. It wiped out several buildings and the new road pushes through where the old buildings were.

That fire made the nightly network news back in the days when there were no cable channels. It was a really big deal.

There have been some other pretty big fires in that part of the state in past years. Seems like there was a huge fire in Jackson several years ago as well. Those old buildings go pretty quickly once they catch.

I feel like it should be noted that in the e-mail James Ramsey sent out yesterday regarding Pitino, Ramsey states he informed Pitino that he needed to apologize.
That could be why the apologize was such BS: He didn’t want to apologize. He did it because Ramsey told him too.
