Regular Frankfort Rumor Mill Round-Up

August 3rd, 2009 · 18 Comments

The Kentucky Democratic Party hired right-wing gay-hater, woman-hater and all-around loose canon Ray Stewart (remember the ad he produced that included hidden camera footage of a woman about to get her sexytime on?) to produce Robin Webb’s silly radio spot. Stewart works primarily for Republicans and folks like Bob Damron. So, donors, know that any money you contribute to the KDP will be used to pay a Republican who traditionally works against Democratic interests.

Is Greg Fischer hiring Kim Geveden? After the way he behaved last year while embarrassing Fischer and treating his staff (Nicole Candler ended up quitting over the mess)? After the way he’s trashed Louisville on behalf of Daniel Mongiardo? After the way he worked on behalf of SB 245? That’s what we hear.

At Robin Webb’s Louisville fundraiser on Friday, she spent the majority of her time speaking by praising Larry Clark. After spending all last session trashing Larry up one side of Frankfort and down the other. There was also lots of praising Jennifer Moore for “rebuilding the Democratic Party.” In attendance were people spanning the political scene. Names like Frank Jones, Greg Dearing, Larry Clark, Denise Harper Angel. About 30 people showed up and we hear a lot of them left without contributing– because of the Jennifer Moore mess.

Oh – Denise Harper Angel spent the majority of her time talking about “that leader” (David Williams). She says she was elected so she could one day be in control of the senate. Said she will take Williams down and that Democrats will be in the majority.

Speaking of Jennifer Moore, the title “Kentucky Democratic Party Chair” was used as she was announced as one of the speakers of the Marshall County Bean Dinner. Something she hasn’t been for quite a while.

We hear Adam Edelen has been telling anyone who will listen that Crit Luallen wants Sylvia Lovely’s job. Edelen allegedly says Crit will take the job and then he will be appointed State Auditor of Public Accounts. Yeah, we know. Absurd and unbelievable. While Edelen does want to be auditor, we can’t imagine Crit wanting to take over an agency that she’s currently auditing.  Primarily because it doesn’t seem entirely legal or ethical. (Maybe now Edelen and his assistants can trash me in-person instead of behind my back? Ha.)

And something not from Frankfort… Here’s some additional information on the David Tandy-Kenya McGruder scandal from Friday. So far I’ve spoken with six Metro Councilcritters who all tell me the same thing.

You’re talking about Ray Stewart of the infamous Connie Hamilton/Tim David May, Floyd County PVA race? It’s unbelievable that any half-sane candidate/person would hire him for any reason. Ray Stewart is the Keystone Kops version of Lee Atwater and/or Karl Rove.

been telling folks about Edelen for a while…he’s all about Edelen (a lot of people are all about themselves but don’t cloak it in I’m supporting gov and our commonwealth). Beshear doesn’t get it…he has surrounded himself by folks who are padding their own pockets and setting up their own political careers. they could care less about him.

In fairness, the governor only hears what he wants to hear. So we can’t necessarily fault the people giving him embarrassingly bad advice.

You must have been at a different Robin Webb function than me. Larry Clark was a bit part of the speech. After speeches from Tim Shaughnessy, Perry Clark, and Denise Harper Angel, she reitierated a little of what each one of them said. She talked about changing the face of the Senate by adding another woman, getting around David Williams, her brother being a Louisvillian, and horses. Lots and lots of talk about horses. She mentioned the old ties between Eastern Kentucky voters and Jefferson County voters. She acknowledged Joni Jenkins, Sheriff Aubrey, and a few others I didn’t know. She said she had been around since the days of Wendell Ford then acknoweldged two of her Young Democrats friends (Mark Henry and Jeff Noble) from those early days who were also in the room. The best part was that she hung around til almost everyone else left talking to everyone there. She closed by saying she was opening her Mason County HQ Saturday at 11. Jonathan Hurst, Bill May, and Dale Emmons seem like they had some official role but it was a young guy from the KDP who was in charge. It was an interesting crowd.

That’s interesting – because everyone I’ve spoken with says Robin Webb didn’t acknowledge Joni and a couple others.

Robin was forced to admitted she neglected to mention Rep. Jenkins in Maysville the very next day.

  • 6 jake // Aug 3, 2009 at 1:10 pm

P.S. Denise mentioned both Jenkins and Aubrey – is that what you mean?

  • 7 ahem // Aug 3, 2009 at 1:15 pm

actually you can blame both…you’re right on with Beshear not listening…but also when someone accepts a non-merit position like gov chief of staff, they should be looking out for gov interest and not their own first.

Since I was mentioned in the above thread, I’m compelled to comment. This is only my second comment in two months. The first was to defend Congressman Yarmuth a few days. Today, I’ll defend Jacob – or at least whoever is providing Jacob with his info.

I do not remember Robin mentioning Joni. Joni stood at the foot of the staircase within eight feet of where Robin was speaking. I do remember Denise mentioning in her opening remarks both Joni and the Sheriff. She called Sheriff Aubrey “MY sheriff” and said he called her “MY senator” which makes sense given Sheriff Aubrey’s Germantown home is in precinct H102, which is in Senator Harper Angel’s district.

I also remember, like the above commenter, that Robin said very little about Larry Clark, except that they had worked well together on issues related to Louisville and that she had always supported those issues. She (Robin) went as far as to mention the Ohio River Bridges project, which I would not have advised her to do. She really only mentioned Clark in the context of extended comments on Louisville. And she did say a whole lot about horses. At least that’s what I remember. I don’t remember the part about opening up in Mason County the next day or I might have gone up there. It is a very pleasant drive. Mason County is key to Robin’s win, just as it was key to Carol Allen’s loss in the same race a few years back. And I too saw my friend Jon Hurst, who I had not seen or spoken to since the presidential race where we were on opposite sides. And Emmons, too. I wished him a happy birthday. His birthday, along with Mary-John Celletti’s, was the next day, Saturday. Robin, Mark Henry, Mary-John, and I were all involved in the YDA elections about one hundred years when we elected Dale as national president. That’s when I had lots of hair, actually an afro, and weighed 135 pounds.

  • 9 Bruce Maples // Aug 3, 2009 at 9:27 pm

See, that’s what makes reading this blog so worthwhile — the image of Jeff Noble with an afro (or perm, as the case may be).

Wow. THAT went right into the file cabinet.

    :–)

I do not believe Jeff Noble ever had a ‘fro.

    This requires photographic evidence!

  • 11 Jeff Noble // Aug 3, 2009 at 11:00 pm

I am often asked to provide photographic evidence of those happy days of long ago. Remember I was a teenager in the 1970s – everyone had plenty of hair. I have plenty of photos from my era with hair. So much so that I carry one such offering of proof on me at all times in my wallet, stuck somewhere between the King Southern Bank Debit Card and my ACLU membership card. I’ve been carrying the King Southern Bank card for about five years. I’ve been carrying the ACLU card for about as long as I been carrying the photo with the hair.

I’ve been proudly showing off this photo for years. I’m surprised that neither of you have ever seen it. The photo in question is on a University of Louisville ID card taken the summer of 1980 when I was 19. I had worked in Frankfort for LRC that spring, after quitting college at UK the previous fall, something I regret to this day. You might think at 19 I might have been one “tough son-of-a-bitch.” If I was, I would never say it, at least not in public. But, I wasn’t. Frankly, in the pic, weighing all of 135 pounds, my weight upon graduation from high school and for the three years following, I look rather stoned, which is well within the realm of possibility.

Bruce, if you will remind me, I’ll show it to you at the next Metro Dems meeting. Jacob, for you to see it will be a little more difficult. Since an April 30, 2009 email from you, I’ve obliged your specific request that I not have any words with you. Other than this comment and two others in the last 72 hours, I’ve abided by your request. I’ll agree to show you the ID if you’ll lift the prohibition. Otherwise, you’ll just have to use your imagination.

Damn I miss that hair. And where did this additional 105 pounds come from?

HA! I told you not to waste your time talking to me about anything related to Ken Herndon. If I remember correctly, it was after Ken was stupid enough to try to subpoena (which I summarily quashed) me for his little witch hunt and it was a message directed at you both.

  • 13 jake // Aug 3, 2009 at 11:16 pm

P.S. It was also around the same time the Preston kid was following me around and when Ken’s attorney pals (one was your Metro Council boss) were trying like hell to figure out who I was talking with/who my sources were.

Lest anyone think I’m exaggerating, they were, indeed, attempting to discover my sources as they questioned Denise Bentley and others during depositions about whether or not they’d ever spoken with me and what they’d spoken with me about.

  • 14 Jeff Noble // Aug 3, 2009 at 11:28 pm

I’m tempted not to respond to what you’ve written, but must.

Actually that isn’t what you wrote and unless you “bcc’d” Ken, it was directed to me alone.

“Please don’t contact me again, as everything will be on-the-record.” You also wished me well with the KDP.

I have the email in my records.

Also, you didn’t summarily quash the subpoena at all. I’m not sure why you believe you did. You were subpoenaed because Herndon’s counsel thought you might have something more to offer. According to your Lexington counsel, you were to be out of town for a period of time, I believe in Washington DC, and she rescheduled your depo for later date in May; such date was later withdrawn by Herndon’s counsel. Although it is unlikely, you may still be called as the case it yet underway to my knowledge. Your subpoena was recalled since the only information you had was the lie-detector test, something Herndon’s counsel had already been provided by King’s counsel before you published it in your blog.

I am hopeful that Ken will bring the investigation to a close, but I am also hopeful that he only does so after all avenues of information have been travelled. Although he was the only person to bring a case, he wasn’t the only person injured by that mailer.

You’ve mentioned Preston, who is a friend of mine, and to my knowledge, a friend of Councilman King’s. I’m not sure what went on between you and Preston at the coffeeshop. You alleged in your blog that he wrote an affidavit concerning the placement of the mailer in a particular place at a particular time. I have Preston’s word, as does Councilman King, that such an affidavit from Preston does not nor ever did exist. I’m not sure why you alleged that. There is an affidavit out there alleging what you said it alleged. It is not Preston’s and all parties involved, with you being the exception, are aware that it is not Preston’s. Preston has actually worked very hard to protect his relationship with that might be called the “other side” in this matter.

Having said all this, I don’t suppose you’ll be asking to see my 1980 U of L ID pic anytime soon.

It’s about three hours past my bedtime. We can take this up some other time.

I defended you throughout Jennifer Moore attempting to silence you. I reported the facts when she and her pals illegally ousted you from the SCEC. I stood up when people got in my face because I had the nerve to defend you.

But you’re full of shit when it comes to Herndon. So you’re walking on pretty thin ice, here, holmes.

Ken Herndon was stupid to believe I wouldn’t publish everything I had. I quashed the subpoena with my attorney, Kif Skidmore, the infamous Lexington counsel you mention. (She happens to be one of the foremost attorneys in the country when it comes to media and freedom of speech.) Primarily because I wasn’t notified in a timely manner and because it was ridiculous for either you or Ken Herndon to think I’d squeal on my sources.

No date was rescheduled, as Herndon’s attorneys didn’t file appropriate paperwork and I was *never* notified. But nice spin.

And, no, I wasn’t set to be in Washington, D.C. I was tending to family.

I’d love nothing more than to be called. Because I have a lot of things to say that neither you nor Ken Herndon want to be public record in the form of a deposition. There is so, so, so much I’ll say. But I’d bet money you’re going to scramble to keep me quiet because it’ll fuck both of your political worlds up. (Not the least of which is the prevailing opinion among several former Herndon supporters and a prominent union printer that Ken knew well in advance of the anti-gay mailer and then attempted to spin things his way.)

According to Herndon’s counsel – and Jim King – they did not have his polygraph examination results prior to my publication.

I still think you should be ashamed for not having the balls to stand up to Jennifer Moore. You let me to do your dirty work. And now that you’re standing behind Ken’s retarded ass witch hunt – one that has forced you to ditch people who have been loyal to you for nearly your entire adult life – you should be even more ashamed. But that’s just my opinion.

Cannot wait to be deposed. Cannot. Wait.

  • 17 jake // Aug 4, 2009 at 12:05 am

Woops. Just saw your other comment.

Preston told folks he wrote an affidavit. And he admitted such to me. I saved all of my text messages from him. (Including the ones where he went batshit insane, threatening to sue me and such because I dared ask him to prove whatever evidence he said he had.)

After I called Preston out – without mentioning his name (you did that, just now), he called Jim King for sympathy.

If Preston has worked hard to protect his relationship, he probably shouldn’t have sent me all kinds of text messages that were never off-the-record.

What occurred at the coffee shop: Preston drove around Java Brewing Company probably 20 or 30 times, repeatedly looking into windows. Which was quite interesting.

By the way – did you ever admit to Dan Borsch that you were, in fact, the guy telling me everything? Because you sure caused a lot of shit that I should have let you deal with on your own.

Cannot. Wait. To. Be. Deposed. Cannot wait.
