More Stuff From Frankfort These Days

Something we’ve been meaning to mention but keep forgetting: Rep. Mary Lou Marzian has pre-filed legislation for a constitutional amendment to repeal the 2004 marriage amendment.

Here it is:

BR 93 - Representative Mary Lou Marzian (07/08/09)

AN ACT proposing to repeal Section 233A of the Constitution of Kentucky relating to marriage.
Propose to amend the Constitution of Kentucky to repeal the definition of marriage; submit to voters for approval or disapproval.

Kudos to Meemaw Marzian!

Jerry Abramson and Steve Beshear could announce their slate next Tuesday. The two rumors floating about say the announcement could come either at Louisville’s Bowman Field or in Paducah.

Larry Clark has been telling everyone who will listen that he’s working hard to find a Democratic opponent to face Rep. Joni Jenkins in Shively. So. Let it be known that Larry the Homophobe has decided it’s a good idea to damage one of the strongest Democrats in Jefferson County. Organized labor should recognize the farce Clark is promoting. (All this is on top of his promotion of Kimberly Greenwell, who we saw looking huffy at Heine Bros today)

And finally, rumor has it that Crit Luallen is so upset with the Governor that she’s going to run with Greg Stumbo. As far-fetched as that is, we’d jump on that boat ASAP. Have a feeling a ton of Democrats would also join up. Crit & Greg should for real get together and run. That’d be an awkward match that may actually have a chance.

We love the rumor mill.

Oh, and check that image below. It’s a license plate on the front of Daniel Mongiardo’s car. Great use of funds.

Heh.

Realistically … what do you think the chances are of Marzian’s amendment being approved by the voters?

I don’t remember the exact numbers by which the 2004 amendment passed, but I’d venture to guess that Marzian’s amendment would fail on the ballot by similar numbers. If the original vote was 75-25 (and like I say, I don’t remember for certain) I’d say Marzian’s amendment would fail 30-70. While there may be sentiment among some of the more liberal Democratic legislators and officials for repealing the amendment, I don’t see the same sentiment among the statewide electorate. Far from it, in fact.

Realistically, it’s a waste of time. But anything is possible.

And it’s nice to see someone stand up for equality.

Nice contrast… of Larry Clark, who has decided to turn into a nasty gay-hater… and Gary Tapp… and Daniel Mongiardo…

First of all — if Clark tries to primary Joni, he’s crazy. She’s a solid rep and a good Dem, and many people will come out to support her. Clark needs to take a chill pill or forty.

Secondly — Crit’s another one that I would support in a heartbeat. As far as I can tell, she has been a solid contributor to the state and to good government.

Finally — Mary Lou, good on ya! I don’t think the bill has a chance of passing — BUT, things are changing all over, even in Kain-tuck-ee. Maybe the vote would be closer than last time, even a lot closer, and that would be a Good Thing.

Hmm … I must have a thing for strong women. :-)
