Interim Dean of the University of Louisville’s College of Education and Human Development had a lot of fluff to share with the media today.
But something stood out for us:
Hazelton(sic) says overall it’s too early to guage what, if any, impact the Felner scandal will have on the school.
That’s right. UofL’s leadership crew has no idea what impact the Robert Felner scandal will have. None. They admit it. More than a year out from the onslaught of the federal investigation.
And you wonder why so many faculty members continue to scream at the top of the rafters.

“Oh, Such Suffering is Hard to Gauge”
I guess one year is not long enough to “gauge” Felner’s horrendous impact. Something like how the sleepy-eyed honchos couldn’t quite “gauge” the crazy Little Man for five long years of the supreme suffering that faculty, staff and students had to endure while they supposedly did the “gauging.” Blake and crew, did you see us struggling in the slime? Did you stretch out your arms? Are we now in purgatory or still on a headlong descent into Hell? It is hard to love a place where suffering so abounds and no one appears able to “gauge” it.

Its shameful that they are using increased enrollment as positive spin on the health of CEHD. I know for a fact that the economy is playing a huge roll on a) people choosing to attend UL and live with parents so they can even afford college and b) teaching being a profession that will actually be hiring folks in 4-5 years. But trying to make us believe that people are actually choosing UL CEHD due to program strength, shameful. In a good economy, my bet is that CEHD enrollment would be too embarrassing to bring up right now.

“Lining Up from Here to Taco Bell”
Always Amazed, you make an excellent point–and one widely supported by research and trends. Historically, college enrollment goes up when the economy goes down. And teaching is a profession that will likely need numbers before too long, especially as baby boomers continue to retire once the economy rebounds. So, Blake and crew probably took credit where none was due. I wonder how IU-Southeast did. My guess is that the two state schools did quite similarly.

“A Minor Fracas or a Living Hell?”
Interim Dean Hazelton described the Felner effect as a mere “incident,” i.e., a minor event. Blake, tell that to the faculty who suffered in endless pain for five long years. To those who lost jobs or relocated because of the needless, unbearable cruelty and insanity inflicted. To the poor KY kids who never got any benefit out of the fraud of the No Child Left Behind grant. To the staff and students who kept their silence, living in fear for their degrees or careers. To the taxpayers for the government dollars that are being spent on the Felner trial. You at least said that there is still suffering to varying degrees in the CEHD, depending on the person. But always remember: They did not experience a minor conflict or disturbance. They were forced to condone the utmost in academic, professional and personal hell because the UofL administration did nothing to prevent or stop the ongoing Felner slaughter.

After one year, why is there no accountability or consequences for President Ramsey, Provost Willinghantz, and the array of Associate Deans within the CEHD? These individuals were complicit with Felner and facilitated his agenda of avarice, malice, terror, and treachery to faculty and staff who dared to cross him. Why are there no consequences? It is hard to believe that UofL administrators are sincere and intentional in righting the wrongs of the five Felner years! Where is the Board of Trustees and the Board of Overseers and their oversight regarding this scandalous behavior and its impact? At the Makers Mark tasing party? As an official ambassador that is SHAMEFUL!
When will the administration provide answers, remedies and consequences? When the llamas come home? Oh yes, they did…. When the cows come home? When the Cards come home to roost?
The lack of regard for faculty and staff by the President and Provost is shameful, insulting, dispicable and insulting! It is time to right the many serious wrongs of the Felner Era.
Are you up to it Shirl and Jimmy? Do you have any conscience? Moral or ethical underpinnings? Thus far the answer, sadly, appears to be NO.

“The UofL Marketeers Cavalierly Trudge Om”
Always Amazed, as you well know, Jake’s bloggers have been railing against UofL’s administrative immorality for over a year now. JR & SW are beyond having interest in ethics and accountability. Their main aims are in the PR realm: visibility in the market of big athletics, big grants, and big “Bucks for Brains.” They largely neglect the daily grind of academic education and how to treat faculty, staff and students. They are essentially marketeers, relatively unconcerned about forging wider community. How often do you see them on campus, let alone the Ed. Blg.? They concern themselves with keeping “company men and women” (that is why the unnecessary, incompetent associate deans in the CEHD still thrive) who will not ask them anything beyond the weather report. It is good, though, to see people like you questioning their lack of integrity and commitment to humane values.
