In interest of fairness, there are also way too many Republicans that are big-R, not small-R. Republican means “rule by law” and most Republican legislators (and Democratic ones too) forget the Tenth Amendment (anything not specified in the Constitution as belonging to Congress should be the duty of the states and the people).

E is right — The Paul’s are small-L libertarians, although I think Ron was made an honorary life-time member of the Libertarian Party, (which, since Texas does not have registration by party, is apparently allowed there), just as most of the legislature in Kentucky is big-D Democrats, not small-D democrats — otherwise, we the people (“demo”) would have the ability to introduce legislation through the petition (proposition) process as they do in California and some other states.

le gardien, the craziest thing about searches is in regard to administrators. No matter how bad they are, or were, in their present or past jobs, they often manage to get other positions (usually even higher ones). Have you noticed? I guess their blistered institutions give them extremely positive references to rid themselves of the scoundrels. And the “forwarding” places of destiny get the crap in the soiled silk stockings. In UofL’s case with crappy Bobby, the search committee and the honchos knew better and still took the mess.

Terri…There is the Libertarian party…then there is the libertarian philosophy…the Paul’s happen to be registered republicans…but very much espouse the libertarian philosophy…much moreso than they do the philosophy and practices of republican party hierarchy.

I remember the search that brought us Shumacker. I was a faculty senator then. They were damn proud of themselves & were true believers. Don’t forget Carol G. How snowed people can be by “outside” candidates & charmed into forgetting to do true due diligence. Not sure of these extremes is worse. ..
I feel strongly that the only outside candidates be assistant professors. I believe that these “national searches” are BS. Like a pro team, you grow with your own draft choices. Choose wisely & provide mentoring leadership…

Just me, thanks for the info. The guy should be seen as innocent until proven otherwise. But he should be checked out very, very carefully by the search committee–as should the other candidates. Unfortunately, I have seen search committees (especially the one at UofL that gave us the Psycho Dean) fail miserably–with simply disastrous results. We cannot afford another disaster in KY.

Given the horrendously incompetent search that brought us Felner, it is imperative that that the state of KY investigate the finalists for state education commissioner as carefully as we hunt for fleas on our dogs. There was evidence of Felner’s prior escapades, but they were ignored. KY cannot afford another fiasco that makes us a global laughingstock in education circles.
P.S. Jake, who’s the one with ties to Herr Felner? Guilt by association is normally a bad thing; however, in this case, any ties to RF require close scrutiny before any ultimate decison is made.
