Louisville Mayoral Possibilities Round-Up

July 6th, 2009 · 8 Comments

So, with Craig Greenberg out of the mayoral picture in Louisville (with recent legislation passed, Museum Plaza will require 100% of his time), who is in it to win it?

  • Greg Fischer is hot in the rumor mill right now because of name ID, money and business experience
  • David Tandy is always mentioned as a possibility because of his Metro Council prominence and is rumored to have Jim Cauley on his team
  • Tyler Allen and J.C. Stites get mentioned because of their opposition to Abramson, though both seem to be afraid to criticize him publicly
  • Jim King is a given because of his cash reserves, name ID and political and business experience
  • Kevin Kramer is a name bandied about on the other side but he and his family seem totally unsure and less than desirous of the job
  • Scott Brinkman is the guy everyone in Frankfort is talking about, but it appears he’s also unsure
  • Rebecca Jackson? Nope, she’s got major health issues
  • Bobbie Holsclaw? Hahaha.
  • Steve Pence? Strong name ID, popular among Louisville Republicans who hate Ernie Fletcher.

Who will it be? Who will be Louisville’s next mayor if/when Jerry Abramson announces this is his last term?

(Wrote this Friday night, before the C-J published its piece, for the naysayers lobbing accusations.)

I actually think Bobby Holsclaw would make an excellent mayor. She has run her department well, without any hint of scandals (unlike the current mayor). However, she would most likely be boring as mayor and you would have less to write about.

I also still think Jack Early (Republican candidate for 2002) would make an excellent mayor as well, but I doubt that he would run again due to his age.

I am surprised that you haven’t mentioned Chris Thieneman, who occasionally has run-ins with what the mayor and/or certain councilpeople do. I do know that he has political aspirations, but do not know what they are at this time.

Someone elsewhere mentioned Doug Hawkins, but I don’t think that he could win the primary unless Peppy Martin was the only other candidate running. Too bad, because I like a lot of his ideas (like not giving carte-blanche to Cordish or the Metropolitan Sewer District). I think Hawkins has been treated too unfairly by the media (Hawkins has that type of personality), and that treatment would be expanded if he ran for mayor.

On the Democrat side, I would like to see Ed Springston as mayor, mainly because we have both been victims of IPL overagressiveness (I was fined for growing Kentucky Goldenrod, the state flower, because my neighbor and the untrained IPL inspector both mistook it for a tall weed), so I know that my desire to see that part of city government completely overhauled would most likely be done.

Another Democrat, dare I say it, would be Tom Owen. His love for the city is indisputable, and I know that he would be a great care-taker of the city, which is what the mayor should be doing, but I disagree with a lot of his stances on the issues.

Given Brad Cummings recent press conference on the doings of the mayor, it will be interesting to see if he or anyone else will make any sort of announcement at the Republican Party picnic this Saturday.

I live in Tom Owen’s district. I support his opponent. I believe Bobby Holsclaw would make an excellent mayor also. She runs a taut ship. Further I frankly am a little tired of our semi flamboyant mayor & most of the poseurs on the city council. Boring would be a welcome change. Go Bobby….
Did anybody notice that last week our council “bonded” some of their shortfall? To me that sounds like further borrowing….

If Scott Brinkman cannot represent his district worth a dime in Frankfort (and he hasn’t), how can anyone consider him as mayor?

I like Jim King for Mayor. With our economy in terrible shape, his business experience and acumen would be a strong selling point. (He’s a CPA and a banker.) He also has the firmest grasp on the budget of any MC member.
Needs to learn to step around shit, though, and not in it.

Slim is right on King’s qualifications. King is a banker and CPA. He knows the budget better than anyone, including the $30,000,000.00 he borrowed to balance it. We are $30,000,000.00 deeper in debt thanks to his financial knowledge.

But, the truth is at this point he will be the next mayor. There are two people who would beat him – one dropped out, Greenberg – and one ain’t running (yet), Maze.

The others out there can’t win. Fischer wouldn’t spend the money last year and won’t do it again. Tyler 8664 Allen needs a few more issues for anyone to take him seriously. And Tandy has no business even thinking about it. He was handed his Council seat the first time and has had to do very little to keep it. No one knows him outside of downtown and not everyone there does.

So if you are for King, you are in luck as he will probably be the next mayor. If you don’t like him, you need to get a hold of Irv Maze and soon.

King’s skeletons are a mile long, I wouldn’t count on him being the next Mayor just yet.

If Steve Pence runs, I just might have to hold my nose and move to Louisville to vote against that bastard.

King’s closet has so many skeletons packed in it he can’t keep the door closed. Does anyone want a re-run of the Patton and Clinton scandals?
