The State House adjourned yesterday in honor of Matthew Barzun, who was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to be the next U.S. Ambassador to Sweden.
Check last night’s coverage of the Senate Appropriations & Revenue Committee meeting where the gambling bill was put to death. [Page One]
The House passed the budget bill but not without criticism. Even the liberals are fed up with it. It’s now clear there really was vote buying going on with the gambling bill. If you voted against it, you didn’t get a school in your district. [Ronnie Ellis]
What will Governor Steve Beshear be known for? Will energy issues be his legacy? In a bad way? Lots of environmentalists seem to think so. Even Brereton Jones thinks he’s walking on thin ice by ignoring tax reform. [Stephenie Steitzer]
The City of Prospect fined that gardening couple again! What an embarrassment. Mayor Todd Eberle and the city council (Loretta Ertel, Stuart Miles, Sandra Leonard, Alan Simon, Sandy Tucci, Mike Scott) should be 100% ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen. You should contact them all to let them know what meddling butt cramps they are. What a waste of tax dollars. [WHAS11 & Prospect Contact Info]

Mitch McConnell says he’s Luke Skywalker to some people. Remember when he was Darth Vader? Glad to hear he’s got enough time on his hands to come up with fancy Star Wars stories. [Washington Post]
Despite the fact that 40% of Americans delay seeking health care and 25% say they can’t afford it, Mitch McConnell is still pirouetting around Washington talking about how everyone is as rich as him and receives secret $25 million gifts that they hide from the FEC. [Reuters]

How long will Mitch McConnell continue to keep the U.S. Senate from filing campaign finance reports electronically? This country can no longer afford such darkness and secrecy. [Politico]
It may be nice to renovate office space in the Capitol so it’s useful. And it may even be necessary. But how can we afford it if our Commonwealth is in such dire financial straits? Not knocking it, just honestly wondering… because spending money you don’t have doesn’t make much sense – even if it’s important expenditure. [John Cheves]
The Jeffersonville, Indiana mayor may be apologizing for the release of photographs that showed a city attorney passed out drunk in a trash can. But. Uh. We think it’s the most priceless thing, ever, and the guy (who was in the can) should be milking this for what it’s worth. He needs to be on the talk show circuit ASAP and should write a book. HELLO! BEST PUBLICITY STUNT EVER! [C-J]

Maybe next time (and there will be one) Ky gaming proponents should use honest numbers. Indiana, with more than 2 million more people than Ky, and 11 full casinos and two racinos, collected 900 million for state coffers last year. And, currently, the vaunted Hoosier Downs is struggling to avoid bankruptcy and half of their casinos are losing money and asking for relief from Indianapolis. Look at the numbers thrown out in Frankfort recently, and add in the hundreds of millions in what would have been real expenses for school construction “inducements”, and what you have was fairy dust. For now it matters not because the issue is dead. The biggest error was not putting the vote to the people to at least add cover for some legislators once the real sausage making took place to formalize Kentucky’s gaming changes. Just sayin. As for Ellis Park, Ron Geary bought that track on the come. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, Ron, so quit your bitching and threatening about closing. Do it or don’t..maybe some other track operator will come along if the price is right. Just sayin.

Wonder how much of that 900 million came from Kentucky?
