Fancy Abramson-Gambling Conspiracy Theory

June 22nd, 2009 · 24 Comments

Okay. Don’t laugh, but some of our readers have a conspiracy theory we want to share for your thoughts:

  • Jerry Abramson vehemently opposed the old Louisville Water Company location for the site of the new arena project
  • Cordish Companies now owns the rights to that piece of property
  • Jerry is allegedly running as Steve Beshear’s Lt. Governor
  • Cordish just applied for a gambling license in Maryland, meaning the company is jumping in to that money pot
  • Beshear was a partner at Stites & Harbison
  • Stites is the new firm representing Cordish Companies’ interests in Kentucky

Did Jerry know Cordish wanted to become a casino baron? Is that why he pushed to keep the LWC site open?

How far-fetched is this theory?

C’d always thought that was eventually the plan, from the time center city was announced. I mean, Cordish’s Indiana Live! project IS a casino, and they own 2 Hard Rock casinos already plus several more casinos are under development

You forgot to mention the secret plan to drive Ward Plauche out of business, so they could turn City Block into a massive 60-story parking tower for the new casino.

Of course, the parking structure would just be a front. Buried deep under the tower would be a secret bunker designed to hold a) the city’s money that’s diverted to Cordish and b) select Gitmo detainees.

But only us true “insiders” are supposed to know anything about that. Shhhhh…..

So Cordish retained new counsel? Hmmmm. Oh well, maybe Cordish club managers could show Churchill how to sell beer before the freshness date expires.

I think Jerry has conspired to keep the LWC site open for private development for one very simple reason.

No private developer would ever develop the LG&E site due to the huge prohibitive costs associated with the relocation of the substation and the flood control measures needed. It was simply a matter of having two potential revenue generating properties, vs. one. The LWC site be developed at some point privately.

I think Jerry is a lapdog for Cordish no because he’s on the take, but because they threaten to take their ball and go home if he doesn’t give them what they want. Jerry is spineless and Cordish knows it. If I were them, I would shake him down for every penny I could get too.

    mark h:
they are shaking him down for every penny they can get except it aint his money, it belongs to the metro government.

    jake:
what happened to the part of the conspriacy that had to do with the c-j guy, bellarmine, & lg&e. the old sports writer put it all together once. are the two conspriacies related?

also the word is out on main street, jerry is running with beshear and everyone will know right before fancy farm, which i’ve never been to.

  • 6 jake // Jun 22, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Too many conspiracies for me to keep up with them all!

  • 7 Mark H // Jun 22, 2009 at 4:32 pm

I hear you Travis!!!! The problem is that he thinks it’s his money. That’s why you and I aren’t supposed to question how much, and where he spends it. Cordish has an obligation to make money for its stockholders. Jerry has an obligation to the taxpayers to spend their money wisely.

The Major of Mulch just needs to step aside.

That’s a new moniker for the mayor for life.. I have heard of The Leutentant of Lillies and The Tyrant of Tulips!

  • 9 Clark // Jun 22, 2009 at 5:40 pm

    Potentate of Parks??

  • 10 Bruce Maples // Jun 22, 2009 at 6:07 pm

“old sports writer” == Billy Reed

And yes, he wrote some very interesting columns on Host, the Arena, the publisher of the C-J, and the LWC space. Had a lot of pointed questions, but not enough answers to connect any dots.

  • 11 Earl // Jun 22, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Stockholders? Isn’t Cordish just a family business?

Who was Cordish’s representative prior to Stites?

Is this similar to the Titan Development stuff?

Which two firms did the mayor work for and when?

I just thought I’d ask. Maybe you guys know.

  • 12 My Thoughts // Jun 22, 2009 at 6:39 pm

I think Ward should make his bars into something like the connection and call it “out of the closet” might bring some conventions here after the FFA

  • 13 Ward // Jun 22, 2009 at 7:48 pm

All suggestions ,leads, ideas are welcome. I’m open to leasing the space to anyone who has interest.
The “Out of the Closet” idea would be fine if there is an operator with the savy to run it.
Please , I’d love to here some creative ideas from V.V. readers, they seem to be the ones in town that have a handle on what’s really going on.

  • 14 slim // Jun 22, 2009 at 8:35 pm

I thought Jerry pushed hard for the Water Co site at the initial stages.

  • 15 Gay Support // Jun 22, 2009 at 9:07 pm

I think that City Block would be a fantastic location for a Gay club.Maybe that’s something that Mayor Jerry could get behind, why maybe he could find another $1.8 million to fund one at City Block, I’m sure he’d have no objection to that .
Why that would even be a great test to the validity to prove :if the City would support & provide a venue for alternative lifestyles entertainment, with the same comparative financial support that they have given the clubs at 4th street, If the City would fund & substain a competative faculity to the Connection, you know, DIRECT competative dillution to the Connection, with free money to build it and run it . It would be very interesting to see the effect of what would happen . Do you think the Connection would claim FOUL!……and if such an operator was to surface & be qualified would Mayor Happy Pants be warm & fuzzy to that deal.
Hell the Gay Community should be pissed all the straight places are getting all the $$$$, not to mention the Black Community hasn’t gotten any spiffs either?

  • 16 travis // Jun 22, 2009 at 10:16 pm

i’m not sure how this conversation got to gay bars, but as a very regular frequenter of them i think the city block would be great spot, since i also spent a lot of time there to at coyotes. also the connection has gotten way to cliqiy for a lot of people. i dont remember it but i hear older gays talk about murphys a lot. we dont have a murphys to go to. we should have a plain old bar to go to, get drunk, and maybe an altercation now and then like a real bar. how bout that? back to the topic, i think beshear should have his coming out party for jerry at connections since the name is so apropriate.

  • 17 Mark Hebert // Jun 22, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Not saying I disagree with him on everything but just wanted everyone to know that Mark H. is not Mark Hebert

  • 18 Mark H (Not Hebert) // Jun 23, 2009 at 12:06 am

I’m very sorry Mr. Hebert if there was any confusion. I’m sure you wouldn’t want Jerry to think you were calling him the Major of Mulch….Could make for some uncomfortable future meetings!

However, I stand by the nickname since he did make that daring citizen arrest of the Brightside mulch bandit a few years back.

  • 19 Crutnacker // Jun 23, 2009 at 6:39 am

Ah…… and the Wayside hotel is where we’ll house the people who lose their houses gambling at Jer’s Circus Crapulus Casino. (Right after they get their last loan from Gus Goldsmith).

And of course, the JCTC will be offering courses in blackjack dealing.

  • 20 AB // Jun 23, 2009 at 7:58 am

Look, connections (not the gay bar) aren’t necessarily conspiracies. Most business ventures are the result of connections. While I think Cordish has McCheese in their pocket (and how that has harmed local businesses really sucks), the development of the arena on the LG&E site vs. the LWC site does make long term sense. A venue like the arena with its somewhat unique public financing/bonding options make it one of the few projects that could overcome the barrier created by the old LG&E infrastructure. Plus, the arena will not be used every night and the proximity to the 2nd St. bridge is a deterrent to many projects (anyone want to live next to it?). A more commercial venue at the LWC site is closer to the core of downtown and has far less barriers to development – a much better fit for a multi purpose live/work/play project (just not a clone of 4th Street Live – we don’t need any more Coyote Ugly clone bars).

  • 21 jake // Jun 23, 2009 at 8:09 am

Just so we’re clear, tons of folks live near the Second Street bridge. And the Blue family is working to re-develop that block of Main Street right beside it.

    Aaaand….

Even more people live by the 65 bridge. The Harbours (Jeffersonville, IN) stands right beside the loudest and busiest portion of the bridge.

(But your point is a solid one)

  • 22 Betsy // Jun 23, 2009 at 9:18 pm

    Mark H (not hebert)
You should talk to the cop that abramson was with when they captured the (mulch bandit)
The cop wanted to let him go with a scare but Jerri thought it would be great pub foor him if they arrested him.
Then when the cop took Jerri home the cop says abramson acted like a happy homo jumpingup and down telling his faux wife I did it!! I did IT!! I just got my first…. whatever that word is when an officer gets his first arrest. Anyone know it?? It is the word jerri will recognize and realize this story is true.

  • 23 Cary Stemle // Jun 24, 2009 at 1:20 am

Jake, how do you define “near” — there’s no homes or apartments to speak of that are what I’d call close to the bridge. But as someone who uses that bridge regularly, coming and going, I have never thought it made sense to cram something that large right there. I have long wondered about the traffic plan, and I see they may close some of second st. permanently. That worries me.

For the record, and it’s just my memory, I think JA favored the LWC site initially but acquiesced when U of L said they absolutely would not play there. The unexplained reasons for U of L’s stance were the subject of some of the pointed questions Billy Reed raised while writing for LEO.

The whole thing has always been odd to me. Those who know, ain’t talkin’.

If somebody really knows about the back-room deals made at City Hall (i.e. other than The Mayor and Bruce Traughber) could grow a couple and help to let the light in on same please do it sooner than later. Years of more of the same is possible and the economic grave being dug for fruitless developments will continue. In addition, where are the investigative reporters of old, whose tenacity and lack of fear of having their access cut off ,helped them get to the “bottom” of issues/stories.
