RUH RO! Big Gambling Story

June 15th, 2009 · 6 Comments

Greg Stumbo just told the press that he asked the Governor to include David Williams’ proposal in the special session call.

So what was that, folks, about me being totally off-base?

He was also forced to admit that they’ve been dangling capital projects in an attempt to get votes.

I.E…. It apparently IS true that that they’re holding schools funding to get gambling votes. And not just category five schools, as this story suggests.

Welcome to the flustercuck, ladies. Welcome.

Jake — question or correction — the linked story says that they will “directly tie a percentage of the tax revenue received from slot machines to the eventual construction of new facilities” for poor schools. That sounds to me like they are taking a portion of the proceeds and dedicating them to school construction.

Your story, OTOH, seems to imply they are withholding funding for some schools to get the votes of those legislators (“holding schools funding”), which is a much different and darker story.

Not being picky, just trying to clarify before I comment. The former, while not a policy I would applaud, is at least fair in politics to sweeten the pot and get votes. The latter is just plain old blackmail.

    Clarification?

    Bruce,

From what I can tell, both are happening.

Well, hell — I hoped I had misunderstood, or you had misspoken, or both.

Keep us posted on this, as much as you can without blowing up your sources. Pulling school funding if you don’t vote the way we want you to — that’s reaching for a new low in Frankfort tactics.

Whatever it takes to get this done. It’s been too long in coming.

I am shocked! Shocked I tell you!

How do you think the booze tax passed this fall?

I wish the governor would at least deliver the bill so the Senate can go ahead and defeat it and we can move on to realistic ways of helping the horse racing industry.
