On Wednesday, Daniel Mongiardo made an appearance before the Metro Democratic Club in Louisville. And we had operatives there.
Here’s the skinny:
An audience member asked Mongiardo about his position on mountaintop removal. Long story short, he said he lived in eastern Kentucky (not true, really, since he lived with his brother the past several years before moving in with his in-laws) and that he “loved the mountains” and that “in the future we will find a better way to do it, but right now we need to protect Kentucky’s coal.”
Another audience member followed up by asking him if he supported the Waxman-Markey Climate Change Bill. His response? He was “not familiar with the details of the bill.” Kind of surprising, isn’t it, that a candidate for the U.S. Senate isn’t familiar with the most far-reaching environmental legislation proposed in the last several decades?
Mongiardo went on to say that global warming was a problem and that we need to address it by reducing carbon emissions. He blabbed for a bit about how great carbon capture and sequestration was going to be, that Kentucky was leading the way in research in the carbon field.
That same audience member asked Mongiardo about his stance on cap & trade and he said, “cap and trade or a carbon tax would triple the cost of electricity in a fragile economy. We don’t need that right now.” Yeah, that’s what he said.
We’re blown away.

Jake, DC Democrats are bailing on Waxman-Markey, and cap and trade was an Enron wet dream before Kenny and the boys went to the Big House. Wanna bet on whether either passes?
2 kentondem1 // Jun 12, 2009 at 10:07 am
Dr. Dan is very good at Right Wing talking points.
3 jake // Jun 12, 2009 at 10:36 am
That’s fine and dandy. But shouldn’t a candidate for the United States Senate - who happens to be a Lt. Governor - know at least a little bit about what we’re discussing?
4 Taylor // Jun 12, 2009 at 11:08 am
I’m not a huge fan of cap-and-trade, but Lt. Dan obviously has no idea what he’s talking about - the whole point is to make electricity expensive as an incentive for backwards ass people like us to start using renewable energy instead of coal. Mongiardo logic FAIL
5 Thunder Storm // Jun 12, 2009 at 11:20 am
Dr. Dan is right in his assertion that Kentucky’s electricity bills could triple if cap and trade comes into existence. Missouri has said theirs “potentially” could quintuple, that’s 5 times to most people
6 Thunder Storm // Jun 12, 2009 at 11:34 am
By the way, Waxman doesn’t most of what’s in the bill and he “wrote” it. He’s been unable to answer several questions by the press about his bill
7 jake // Jun 12, 2009 at 11:39 am
Unable to answer questions or unwilling to answer them?
Big difference.
8 Thunder Storm // Jun 12, 2009 at 12:08 pm
He said he didn’t know when asked by a reporter. Reporter said something along the lines of … But you wrote the bill.. Waxman replied, next question
9 Thunder Storm // Jun 12, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Hey Jake , check out the state journal , Mongiardo is gonna have a baby. Now the baby wars begin between him and Conway
10 jake // Jun 12, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Mmm hmm. Mentioned that a couple days ago.
Congrats to the Mongiardos!
11 Thunder Storm // Jun 12, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Must read your site more often, SJ is always a few days behind everyone else
12 Conservative // Jun 12, 2009 at 4:16 pm
You all may want your electricity bills to go up. I don’t and neither should any reasonable person.
13 Taylor // Jun 12, 2009 at 4:22 pm
then perhaps you should join with all the dirty hippie communists who have been pushing KY to adopt renewable energy standards forever so that LG&E, KU, EKPC and any other electricity providers don’t raise the hell out of your rates b/c they’re polluting like crazy? Or, perhaps, you should be willing to pay for what your electricity ACTUALLY costs, not what government subsidies to the coal industry make it appear to cost. just some thoughts…
14 Coal Train // Jun 12, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Taylor, you ignorant slut. Hippies smell.
15 Taylor // Jun 12, 2009 at 6:38 pm
I see you still can’t make a coherent argument after the last couple weeks of vanishing into obscurity. Do they teach you to talk like that at the Baptist seminary or did you learn it somewhere else? Jeebus surely doesn’t approve of such foul language, and probably doesn’t think too highly of your total inability to make reasonable arguments when in disagreement with someone else. You make Jeebus cry… I hope you feel good about yourself, now.
16 Coal Train // Jun 13, 2009 at 10:22 am
Taylor, you ignorant slut. Some of us just pay the bill our utility company sends us. I’m sure you can’t wait for the day when communist hippie tards like you tell us what we should really pay. Good luck with that, twit. PS What’s the carbon foot print of your earthly gods Al the Gore and John the poverty slayer Edwards? Zeus thinks you’re a silly twat, too.
17 Taylor // Jun 13, 2009 at 11:42 am
Since you’re content to pay what someone else says you should pay, I’m sure you won’t mind when the bill your utility company sends you triples, right?
And thanks for continuing to prove my point that you can’t actually make reasonable comments on anything I say, and instead resort to comparing my very different world view with that of two just left-of-center, millionaire Democrats who live more ostentatiously than I ever could. have fun continuing to lose arguments…
p.s. - vulgarity for vulgarity’s sake isn’t funny. also, twit and twat aren’t really funny, regardless. And calling someone an ignorant slut over and over again is unnecessarily repetitive. Use a thesaurus?
18 jake // Jun 13, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Many of my closest friends are students at or graduates of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Fortunately, none of them - nor anyone else I’ve met from the school or even the SBC - act so disrespectful and personally disgusting.
Why can’t you people attack the message instead of the messenger?
If you’re so insecure, you shouldn’t be at the Seminary. That’s for damn sure.
19 Coal Train // Jun 13, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Respectful is as respectful does, fellers. Seriously, do either of you ever read your own stuff? Taylor in particular is a smug little jerk who wants to re-structure American society based upon theory and personal conceit. And Jake, attack the message instead of the messenger? There’s a log in your eye.
20 jake // Jun 13, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Show me where I’ve attacked someone - personally - who hasn’t jumped on me or who hasn’t personally attacked me.
So Taylor is “a smug little jerk” because he has opinions and ideas, just as you have your opinions and ideas? Niiice. That’s not hypocritical in the least.
21 Coal Train // Jun 13, 2009 at 1:04 pm
OK, Jake, what’s the predicate for your attacks upon Mongiardo? What did he do to you personally? Or, just one post above…Was Kyle Cox really “let go” by the Obama Carolina campaign over some “alleged mess”? I’m done with Taylor because he’s a little bore and he always calls out his big brothers when he gets into fights.
22 jake // Jun 13, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Daniel Mongiardo is an elected official and candidate for federal office. I attack his record and the things he does as a candidate. As I do with most every other elected official and candidate. Even folks with whom I am friends.
Kyle Cox was, indeed, canned by the Obama crew, according to members of the KDP we’ve spoken with.
You’re done with Taylor because you can’t refute what he has to say or you’re frustrated that he makes quite valid points when refuting what you have to say.
23 Coal Train // Jun 13, 2009 at 1:38 pm
No Jake, I’m done with Taylor because he is a self-righteous dim-bulb who fashions himself some type of planet saver. And what does Mongiardo’s living arrangements have to do with his record?
24 Taylor // Jun 13, 2009 at 2:05 pm
If I’m such a dim-bulb, why have you never taken any statement of mine (from any of the sites that you troll around on) and proved it to be factually incorrect, logically fallacious or, more simply, an insufficient explanation of the problem at hand?
Oh, right, it’s because an obviously enlightened, superior intellectual powerhouse as yourself is too busy calling me a (in reverse chronological order): “planet saver” (not sure when this became such an insult, but you obviously meant it as one), “self-righteous dim bulb”, “little bore”, “smug little jerk”, “twat”, “twit”, “communist hippie tard”, “ignorant slut” (x2), “pussy” and “smug little prick” (only a slight revision of your more recent insult) to actually use your brain to either come up with some funny insults or refute something I’ve said.
25 Coal Train // Jun 13, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Save it for the dim bulbettes at the Phish concert, Taylor. Your brand of politics and ecoism is as predictable as yesterday’s weather.
26 Taylor // Jun 13, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Apparently not so predictable, since you a) think that I like Phish (in fact, I loathe them) and b) continue to throw Al Gore and John Edwards at me like they are representative of my beliefs. You sure have trouble making substantiated remarks, don’t you?
27 Coal Train // Jun 13, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Good on you for not liking Phish, Taylor. There’s hope for you yet, kid. Now I’m going to go out and enjoy the nice weather while I can, because I hear that in a few short years we’re all going to fry like donuts because we’ve angered mean Mr. Sun.
28 Joe // Jun 14, 2009 at 4:45 am
The Louisville Seminary really needs to drop their Douchebag Trolling 101 class.
29 Lou Lou Observer // Jun 14, 2009 at 2:05 pm
It’s cute the way Jake selectively outs those who dis-agree with his little friends. Heard any good living arrangement rumors about Conway lately, Jakie?
30 jake // Jun 14, 2009 at 3:14 pm
That’s bullshit. I don’t selectively out people who disagree with me or anyone. I out people who needlessly attack personally, make death threats (as this individual has done to Taylor in the very recent past), or continually spam my network of websites.
Daniel Mongiardo is an elected official and candidate for federal office… so you folks can quit complaining about how awful it is that anyone would have the gall to point out every mistake his campaign makes or anything he does that could be potentially less than Kosher.
31 Coal Train Council;-) // Jun 15, 2009 at 9:41 am
Mr. Payne, The making of a death threat is a very serious matter, as is haphazardly accusing someone of making such a threat. In a very short period of time, a more tech savvy associate of mine found abundant evidence of one Taylor Shelton being very profane, belligerent, offensive, and perhaps even “threatening” to those who dis-agree with his personal opinions and theories on coal, global warming, politics, religion, etc. Some might say that the young man can be quite the ummmm, shall we say, jerk about such matters of opinion. Perhaps it’s time for Mr. Shelton and company to either defecate or file a charge if they can’t handle returned rhetorical fire on a blog. PS. I’ve been told that a cyber wink corrects mis-spellings.
32 jake // Jun 15, 2009 at 9:43 am
He contacted police.
33 You Konow Who // Jun 15, 2009 at 9:58 am
He contacted the police? The relevant question is this, of course, about what?
34 jake // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:04 am
Regarding you, the individual who made a death threat on BarefootandProgressive.com.
35 Coal Train // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:12 am
There’s that icky term again. Otay panky.
36 Taylor // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:37 am
Care to cite those examples of me being “profane, belligerent, offensive, and perhaps even ‘threatening’”? My guess is probably not.
37 Coal Train // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:43 am
Here all day, Taylor, with cash for bail. You know, kid, as much as I despise Al Gore, I would never assign complicity to him just because the Unabomber treated Earth In The Balance as gospel.
38 Taylor // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:46 am
I think you’ve thrown out so many red herrings over the course of the last few weeks that you’re finally getting back to the original topic! I’m not sure if that’s deserving of a medal or a dunce cap.
p.s. - still waiting on some evidence to back up those claims about me…
39 Coal Train // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:50 am
I’m still waiting for the cops, kid.
40 Taylor // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:55 am
I can’t make the police do anything. I gave them what they asked for, so the rest is up to them. Besides, it’s hard for the police to find you when you comment anonymously and bounce around from public network to public network. If you’d like to just go ahead and out yourself and head to the police station and give a full admission, I’m sure they’d be happy to consider some leniency.
Besides, nobody is stopping you from backing up your claims.
41 Coal Train // Jun 15, 2009 at 10:59 am
Taylor, in the spirit of the great W. C. Fields..Be gone kid, you bother me. PS I hope you don’t play poker with real money.
42 Taylor // Jun 15, 2009 at 11:11 am
Jake can correct me if I’m wrong here, but I believe you are the troll who hasn’t substantiated a single thing you have said on this site or on B&P, and I would venture a guess that you probably haven’t done so on any other sites you troll around on, either.
