More on the Fancy Battery Manufacturing Business

April 17th, 2009 · No Comments

From the Governor’s office to the local Democratic Party, people tell me I’m being unfair. All because I get the sense that the Beshear crew is talking out of both sides of its mouth. You can read all about that– and see video– by clicking here.

But we wanted to point out something else that, unfortunately, makes us question what we’re being fed.

WHAS11 seems to understand that this is not signed, sealed and delivered. But listen to what elected officials have to say on video with Mark Hebert.

At the 2:11 mark, Hardin County Judge Executive Harry Berry says something to the effect of, “Well, we certainly are ecstatic in Hardin County. This is a great day for the Commonwealth and a great day for us in Hardin County.”

Maybe I’m crazy (plausible, really)… but… it seems to me that since this isn’t a done deal, the Beshear Administration and electeds in Hardin County are setting everyday Hardin Countians up for a bit of a letdown. All because, as the Beshear Administration has said on this site, we are in a major competition for the battery facility – it’s not a done deal as many have been led to believe. Why would a Judge Executive be so excited over news of a competition if it’s not even remotely guaranteed? Maybe because he was led to believe that it is guaranteed? All conjecture on my part, but just wondering.

To further prove my point: at the 2:31 point in the video, Elizabethtown Mayor David Willmoth says, “This is fantastic news. It’s one of those opportunities that only comes along once in a lifetime.”

So in one video we have two elected officials wetting their pants in excitement because we’re in “competition” for a battery plant. Either they misunderstood what Beshear announced or they always get excited when the wind changes? We can’t figure it out.

Are we being unfair? Is it really wrong for me to question this whole shebang? On one hand the public is being told it’s happening. On the other hand we’re being told that we’re in major competition and that it could happen. And we’re being unfair for questioning it?
