Really, could yesterday have gone on any longer? Can this Jim Bunning mess get any crazier?
Oh oh– we got our annual Tom Riner fridge magnet and legislative survey in the mail a couple days ago. As always, it’s a photo of Riner and his 95 children and this time it’s a calendar. The fanciest part? His survey didn’t bother to mention Senate Bill 68. We found it strange because he did mention House Bill 72.
Representative Joni Jenkins’ House Bill 383 cleared committee yesterday with 100% yes votes. It’s now headed to the full House for a vote. It would require ice baths at high school athletics practices when the heat index is 94 or above and would also require coaches to know CPR and how to use defibrillators. [Stephenie Steitzer]
According to the UCAL School of Law, SB68 would cost the Commonwealth of Kentucky more than $5.3 million in the first year. The report suggests 630 foster children will be removed from their current homes and placements during the first year that the ban is in effect. 85 children in foster care will either not be adopted or remain in foster care longer because the ban will prohibit their adoption. David Williams says he isn’t sure if he will challenge Jim Bunning in 2010. [C-J]
Really? Now the Republicans are whining about the Herald-Leader writing stories about Greg Stumbo? The hypocrisy is ripe, ladies. Ripe. Complaining that there’s media bias because the paper wrote similar stories about Ernie Fletcher. Hahaha. [Marcus Carey]
And more from the Courier-Journal: The new General Assembly Accountability and Review Division, as proposed by Speaker Greg Stumbo and Senate President David Williams, is one of the worst ideas to come along in some time. It would be expensive, duplicative, outrageously secretive and inevitably abusive. Rawr. [C-J]
Pam Platt is one of those damn homosexual terraist sympathizers. [C-J]
Did you know? Publicly funded family planning prevents nearly 2 million unintended pregnancies and more than 800,000 abortions in the United States each year. [MSNBC]
Peep the rest after the jump…
Speculation certainly is heating up over Jim Bunning’s U.S. Senate seat. State Senate President David Williams won’t rule out running against him. The McConnell machine is trying to oust him. The NRSC is leaking stories about him. And he’s being allowed out in public to really put his feet in his mouth. Is the end nigh? [Bluegrass Politics]
Hrm. John Cornyn just endorsed Jim Bunning after the nasty attacks Bunning threw his way earlier in the day yesterday. What a circus. [Politico]
Finally, the Courier-Journal chimes in on the Felner-Schroeder situation. [C-J]
Erm. The GOP has put away its rusty GOP butcherknife of doom and is now rehearsing grumpy facial expressions for Barack Obama’s speech. [Huffington Post]
The Office of the Attorney General yesterday announced a cybersafety grant from the AT&T Foundation that will help fund cybersafety initiatives in Kentucky. The OAG’s announcement of the $77,000 grant was in partnership with Kentucky Child Now and the Kentucky Department of Education. “The Internet is a wonderful gateway for education and entertainment for young people, and we must empower parents, teachers and students with the knowledge and tools to be safe online,” said Mary Pat Regan, president of AT&T Kentucky. “We are very pleased to support General Conway and the work of this important coalition.” [Press Release]
Haha – Jack Conway says that Jim Bunning should apologize again for his nasty remarks about U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “I thought his comments were insensitive and callous,” Conway said. “I think for the good of Kentucky he needs to stand up and give a more thorough apology to Justice Ginsburg.” [Bluegrass Politics]
Senate Bill 62, sponsored by Damon Thayer and supported by Trey Grayson, passed unanimously from the State Senate yesterday. The bill would increase the frequency of campaign finance reports and would require statewide candidates to file said reports electronically. “It is past time for the General Assembly to act on this legislation which represents the most comprehensive and significant proposal in years to increase the transparency of the elections process in our Commonwealth,” noted Grayson. “This bill served as a beacon of light onto how campaigns are funded in our Commonwealth, all the while providing the information in a hassle-free and efficient format for citizens.” [Press Release]
Woah: Republican governor of Utah says that Mitch McConnell is inconsequential because he doesn’t have any ideas. Thanks to a fancy commenter for this one. [DailyKos]
Even Jack Conway is concerned about the Stumbo-Williams Super Secret Legislative CIA KGB Po-leece Monster Party idear. [FOX17 Nashville/AP]

I live in the poorer section of Rep. Riner’s District, but I still haven’t got my fridge magnet, I wonder if that’s a USPS error?
Anyway, I’m curious- What did his newsletter have to say about HB72?
When I saw him Wednesday. he told me he wasn’t going to hold it up in committee (He sits on the House Judiciary Committee this year)
