I knew it.
Hopefully we can get one of the KY Senate seats for the party.

Hell yes, Thanks for the update on Twitter. This is great news

Does Mongiardo have to resign the Lt. Gov. position?
4 jake // Jan 25, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Nope. Doesn’t have to resign.
Though, it’s not like the LG in Kentucky ever has anything to do. Not just him, but none in the past have ever done anything. So. No real need to resign. Plus he’ll need the job if (when) he loses.

This is great news. I really like Mongiardo
6 jake // Jan 25, 2009 at 11:25 pm
He’s merely the first in the race, since we’re not counting fringe candidates.
Doubtful that he can win over progressives in the golden triangle. They tend to move with people like Crit Luallen, who has already expressed her support for Jack Conway, should (when) he enters the race.
7 Thunder Storm // Jan 25, 2009 at 11:52 pm
Is progressives the new term for liberals? If Crit pushes Conway in the race or she decides to run, it will be interesting but I’m with Mongiardo.
Keep the Twitter updates coming.
8 jake // Jan 25, 2009 at 11:55 pm
No pushing necessary. Jack will jump in the race.
Click here for a definition of “progressive”…
I.E., Mongiardo can’t escape being the author of Senate Bill 245. The “gay hate” legislation. And he’s behind numerous drives to force Kentucky legislators to disavow gays, say they don’t support equality, aren’t gay, would never support gays, yadda yadda.
9 Thunder Storm // Jan 25, 2009 at 11:59 pm
Just keep hearing on television that liberals are now trying to redefine themselves as progressives. No problem, I’m just having fun with it.
I thought Williams called Mongiardo gay, then when he married the young one, he was called a child molester :)
What year was SB 245 offered, I’ll look it up one lrc.gov
10 jake // Jan 26, 2009 at 12:02 am
SB 245 was the Marriage Amendment of 2004.

Looks like Mongiardo wasn’t the only one involved in this, but one of many …

so we have the DINO gaybasher joining the race. whatever. but what worries me is that the DINOs out in the state are going to vote for him in the primary. i know that the state has much better candidates from real progressives (horne) to conservative dems (lundsford). but i fear that any of the progressives in the state are never going to get the opportunity to vote for the other progressive democrat because a lot of them aren’t registered democrats and the state fears third/no party voters expressing a choice between 1 and 1a.
based on the presidential election results, being known as the guy who cosponsored the gay bashing amendment may play very well out in the state.

Here we go, the new label for Liberal is Progressive.
Haven’t seen that term and Democrat associated until after Obama won the election.
Show me one progressive democrat in Kentucky. If you work in state government, you will see it never changes, regardless of party.
Just by changing the terminology will not make things better.
Until lobbyists and their money are banned from Frankfort, it will never change.

“New Victorianism vs. Civil Rights”
KY seems caught between a New Victorianism and adherence to civil rights for EVERYONE. Unfortunately, our state appears closer to the former. Let’s stop the gay bashing in politics (and religion), no matter the party, and give equal rights to ALL.
P.S. I wonder if Henry Clay, like John Ashcroft, draped state statues that exposed bare breasts.
Henry probably had better things to do.

All right, it’s clear that you’re wholly disconnected from politics or are working to muddy waters. We get it.
One would have to be in order not to already know that Daniel Mongiardo is the author of the anti-gay legislation.
And “progressive” is a term that’s been in heavy use for at least ten years.
16 DL // Jan 26, 2009 at 8:15 am
Daniel can’t raise the money and Jack can – end of story. Plus, Daniel has hurt himself in east KY for his comments about why the region didn’t vote for Obama. He disputes what was reported but regardless, the perception is that he disparaged folks in east KY. Additionally, Jack will surround himself with competent, professional policitos while Daniel will keep listening to the same people. Finally, Jack can raise money outside KY. Daniel can’t and with the Governor launching his relection campaign sometime this year and raising money that is going to cripple Daniel.
One more thing – I don’t think the Governor will work that hard for Daniel. He may in fact endorse him (I’d be surprised) he may put his name on a few fundraising letters but I doubt he does that much for Daniel.
The question is – who is Beshear’s running mate in 2011?
17 jake // Jan 26, 2009 at 8:23 am
The way I hear it, the Governor will quietly (or not so quietly) support Jack Conway. He and the Lt. Governor do not having even a modicum of a working relationship.
Mongiardo has lost his staff in the past couple months because of difficulty working with him/getting him to work.
That said, I don’t expect Steve Beshear to launch a re-election campaign any time soon. If he’s smart, he’ll wait until 2010 polling to see if he’s got a leg to stand on. This legislative session won’t be kind to him.
18 Shack // Jan 26, 2009 at 8:57 am
We got the Press Release and Jake you make a lot of sense, the Governor will quietly support Jack? Not in a million years!
19 jake // Jan 26, 2009 at 9:02 am
Guess you haven’t paid attention to who the Governor has on staff, haven’t spoken to the governor or anyone surrounding him lately.
Mongiardo doesn’t have a working relationship with the Governor and it’s mostly due to the major political rift between the two.
20 Republican // Jan 26, 2009 at 9:05 am
Shack, surely you realize that Beshear and Mongiardo aren’t getting along. When, as I’ve read elsewhere, Mongiardo can’t even get his doctor’s office secretary’s husband appointed to a political position in KYTC in Mongiardo’s home area, it’s obvious that relations are strained.
And somehow I don’t see gay rights, or whatever term one might want to use, being a winning issue among Kentucky voters, either in a primary or a general election.
21 jake // Jan 26, 2009 at 9:10 am
And in other news.. Kim Geveden and Larry O’Bryan are hardly the people you want on your team if you’re trying to win a Democratic primary.
Neither have won a race as far back as I can remember.
22 Shack // Jan 26, 2009 at 9:11 am
Politics man, politics, the Governor will do what ever is in his best interest. Period. And if supporting Jack is in his best interest, he will support Jack but I don’t think that will happen.
23 DL // Jan 26, 2009 at 10:42 am
Well it is certainly not in his best interest to “lay it on the line” in a primary.
Jake is correct when he points out the quality of people Daniel has around him. Jack has and will have a lot of talented people around him.
24 Thunder Storm // Jan 26, 2009 at 10:53 am
Jake is right on the people Mongiardo surrounds himself with thing. If KG is an integral part of his election campaign, Mongiardo has picked someone who doesn’t know how to win.
Mongiardo needs to surround himself with successgul people to be successful.

Mary Lou Marzian would make a great Lt Governor/Governor/Senator.
