For only the second time ever, we’re proud of Dubya. (The first time was the speech he gave atop a bus or whatever right after 9/11.)
Some Iraqi “journalist” threw his shoes at him during a press conference today. He ducked, handling himself awesomely. Check it and watch the video.
We’re also pretty proud of Dubya’s line after the hilarious incident:
“All I can report is a size 10,” Bush joked.
Hahaha.

I have such mixed reaction to this video. On the one hand, there’s something totally scary about it… all those cultural reference points to assasination attempts… Reagan, Lennon, the Pope, what have you. On the other hand, who the heck hasn’t felt like throwing a shoe at President Bush time and again?? I guess I’ve wanted to throw a shoe at the TV when he’s been on (“You’re doin a heckuva job, Brownie” springs to mind first) but NOT at the man himself.
BTW, on Friday one of the students from my “bad class” (love them still) asked me if I wore boots so often to help me resist the urge to throw my shoes at them. And I’m thinking… who among my colleagues is chucking pumps at these kids???
Iraqi journalist: buy some boots

For the record, in Arabic cultures striking someone with a shoe is about the lowest display of contempt possible. Even pointing the bottom of your foot at someone can cause great offense (Qadaffi did it to Tony Blair years ago and caused an uproar in the Arabic press. Blair was clueless though). The point of the gesture is to compare the recipient to the dirt on your soles, the lowest part of the body.
Now that we have once again seen shoes used as weapons of mass destruction, I wonder if reporters at future press conferences will be forced to go sock-footed, or wear parking enforcement-style “booting devices” over their footwear. As for the Iraqi man behind this, I’m sure he is already enjoying an all-expenses-paid renditioning to a country not of his choosing.

So very funny, so very pathetic, so very sad.
The office of the Presidency has sunk so low that we laugh at him, not with him. Not one single person is outraged, not even Bush himself.
Wow.
