Bruce Lunsford Releases “How It Works”

August 7th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Bruce Lunsford’s second ad is being released statewide this morning:

Peep the transcript after the jump…

“Here’s how it works in Washington: The politicians get millions in campaign cash. The special interests get what they want. And we get the short end of the stick. Mitch McConnell is the master of this system. It’s how Big Oil gets billions in tax breaks, and we get $4 a gallon gas. It’s how Wall Street gets bailed out, and people lose their homes. It’s how senators get indicted, and Mitch McConnell says nothing. If you’re tired of this system, I say it’s time for a change. I’m Bruce Lunsford and I approve this message.”

Bruce needs to run an ad with the picture of McConnell and Bob the Utah mine owner together.
There’s an article out there somewhere about the mine-owner stating that he didn’t have to worry about recriminations because McConnell is a good friend of his. This was pre-collapse of the dangerously worked mine which buried miners alive and the drama witnessed blow by blow as the owner insisted the cause was an earthquake, and that he had not improperly taken coal, which as it turns out, he’d done lots of things not allowed for mine safety.
Needless to say, mine safety is of big concern to Kentuckians. And obviously Mitch did nothing for mine safety (nor did Anne Northup for that matter). Check Congressional voting record on mine safety issues.

Are you talking about this and this?

Yeah. I can’t wait to see ads about ALL this stuff. Lord knows McConnell has given Lunsford *plenty* of material.

Was this originally made for You Tube and they just decided to air it? Could they not find a camera tri-pod or a camera with a stabilizer on it? Is the campaign so broke that it couldn’t afford licensing for a sound track? Just curious. Kind of a weird commercial.

    Terri,
Thanks for those links. Yes, that is the story.
When the story was big, day to day waiting for the big rescue, there was a photo about of McConnell and the outspoken/self-centered/liar mine owner, both all smiles…This may have been on Huffington Post, but also in other publications. It can’t be that hard to find.

That picture is worth a million words, particularly with the recent ruling that that Utah mine had operated all-out, ignoring rules in place for the protection of miners.

Okay, 1 it is really weird how there is no background music or noise. But its understandable they wanted a clean ad with the focus being on Bruce’s words and message. But two problems, if that is the goal then you need to set the apeture on your camera so that the background is more “fuzzy” and you don’t have real clean lines. Second problem is that the zooming in is incredibly jerky and distracting.

While Bruce’s delivery is decent, he should have a “stage coach” because there are some semi-random pauses that also take away from the effectiveness.

Finally, most importantly, this is an odd time to be airing this kind of ad. Air the most scandalous shit about McConnell–be almost liable. No one is paying attention right now, and if you are almost liable against him, then they will start paying attention. Run a crazy negative ad–like the “Mudman” Ad from the Fischer primary and run a beautifully shot and cheesy positive spot about how great Bruce is. If they look very different people might not realize they are from the same campaign.

They should have waited to launch this ad after the August 30th FEC filing. Made a huge stink in earned media about how much money McConnell is getting from special interests. Push the story on him and launch the ad all on same day.

The Lunsford campaign seems incredibly disorganized and for such a businessman it seems to be run with very little quality and oversight to details. Its rather disheartening because this is a race that we really could win. They just need to really think about what the f*ck they are doing because it is chronically obvious that there is very little strategy present.

Clean the ad up and re-air it the week before the election.

Terribly done ad. I can’t remember what he said. Too distracted by the special Olympics camera work. Sounds like it was written & looks like it was produced under major time constraints, yet there’s nothing timely about it. Has he given up already?

So what your looking for in this is the ominous we are about to die music at the beginning and then the everything is right with the word if you vote for me music at the end?

    Those ads drive me nuts.

What he is saying is true, it’s just a shame it’s not someone else saying it.
