Thursday Afternoon Update Dept of Craziness

Did you know? Martin Cothran says a story about gay-hating really had nothing to do with gay-hating. How quaint. Also, Jake thinks he’s “big stuff” these days. And yeah, those who do nothing but complain about the gays all the time are probably closet queens, Marty. For example: Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Glenn Murphy, Jr. Huge, huge closet homos. Huge. [Martin Cothran]

Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd ruled that the road bill Steve Beshear vetoed is invalid because it wasn’t given to the governor until after the close of the session. [PolWatchers]

We’re not sure how Republicans can not expect us to lose respect for them when he continues to post racist tripe over and over and over again. This time MC publishes a photo of prominent African Americans praying with Barack Obama with the headline, “Be afraid, Be VERY, VERY Afraid!!!!!!!” You may not be a racist, but repeatedly publishing crap like this will continue to drive people away. [Marc Carey]

And more from PolWatchers… The Republican Party of Kentucky is now going after Bruce Lunsford by blaming him for high gas prices. How much lower can the RPK sink? This ridiculous claim is getting embarrassing. [PolWatchers]

David Adams continues to repeat the Republican meme that the economy is peachy keen! No recession here! Carry on about your business, kids. Nothing to see. All you have to do is think positive thoughts. [KY Progress]

The McCain campaign is accusing Barack Obama of playing the race card. Heads up to McCain: If you’re really worried about Obama’s actions and aren’t just trying to fabricate a racially-charged snafu? You wouldn’t wait a day-and-a-half to respond. [Huffington Post]

“The left’s reign is over in Congress. Praise Jesus!” Proclaims someone named “K. Smith” in a letter to the Courier-Journal. Never mind that the “left” hasn’t been in control of congress since, oh, before Newt Gingrich. Make sure you check out the other hilarious letters to the editor that spew the exact same talking points from the McConnell campaign. We love it. [C-J]

To end on a positive note, here’s a message from a prominent McCain supporter to you. These are my testing supplies! [The YouTubez]

No, this is not merely a photo of black people praying. It is symbolic of the worship of Obama. Look at the photo.

Obama, the press and many others have tried to paint this Marxist, racist dangerous man as “The Messiah”. This photo shows people reaching for him, not Him, as they pray.

Am I afraid of Obama, of course not. What I DO fear however is any movement in this nation that suggests Obama deserves to be worshipped.

And why do I fear this?

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
    Matthew 24:23-25

  • 2 jake // Jul 31, 2008 at 8:58 pm

The only thing it’s symbolic of is a laying on of hands. Something a church-going man like yourself should be quite familiar with. They’re hardly worshiping him.

I wouldn’t worry about that. With our corporate news media, the Republican party, and even some of the Democrats themselves(Cough!.. Joe Lieberman..Cough!) you don’t need to worry about any Democrat becoming to powerful. Now a Republican on the other hand…

I’d actually disagree with this comment. I don’t think “the left” has actually EVER been “in control” of Congress. For one bright and shining moment in the seventies I thought it actually might take some control but it was snuffed out by, among other things, the Carter bust, the US Iranian hostage fiasco leading to-those hilarious Raygun years. Anyway that’s my quick 2c…surfing off….

Nope, Jake, sorry, it’s not that easy. Nothing I said in my post, or my comments had anything to do with race. That was an unjustifiable leap on your part. My post was a follow up to Obama’s comments to Congress earlier in the day.

When Obama refers to himself as “the symbol the world has been waiting for”, when the press reports how he causes people to faint, when numerous photos of Obama have appeared with a halo like image behind his head and when the discussion of his campaign has included references to his “messiah” like appeal, it is certainly fair game to expose a photo of this sort as having the potential to be used to further what others than me have outed as sacrilegious propaganda.

Take a look at the photo. Look at the posture Obama strikes. I know that cameras catch only fragments of a second and that they can often be misused. That is my point. We need to be fearful of how mortal men are portrayed when the manipulation of public opinion is the goal.

Just remember the huge posters of Lenin in the USSR, and the banners and statues of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. And remember the words of the great manipulator himself, Adolph Hitler:

“By the skillful and sustained use of propaganda, one can make a people see even heaven as hell or an extremely wretched life as paradise.”

Your characterization of my concerns as being driven by racism, when there is not the slightest evidence to support it, perhaps says more about your sensitivity to the issue, than my lack of it.

But thanks for the traffic, and the debate.

  • 6 jake // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:39 pm

It had everything to do with race– it was a photo of like 30 black people.

Your argument is total bullshit Republican spin.

He IS what the world has been waiting for– the answer to the problem that is Bush’s America.

The press reports that people faint at Obama events after waiting in line for dozens of hours.

The same amount of photos have been published by the AP over the years that show Dubya with a halo over his head, with a cross directly behind him or with Jesus superimposed.

Sacriligious propaganda? The man was praying with a group of prominent black people. Jesus fucking Christ.

Obama strikes a posture of a tall black man– something that terrifies most white Republicans in Kentucky.

Comparing Obama to Lenin, Hussein, and Hitler is absolutely dispicable. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I probaby wouldn’t have brought this up if you hadn’t repeatedly done shit like this. The image of Ernesto, the random black jokes and now this photo. That’s plenty enough evidence for me. You may not be a racist but your actions certainly can reeeeek of racism and racial insensitivity.

  • 7 Joe Sonka // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:44 pm

You have an add up on your site that says the Obamas are giving black power fists.

You are scum. No, thats too kind.

Just come to grips with the fact that he IS going to be your President. All this pathetic lashing out is just sad.

  • 8 jake // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Seriously– why on earth would you have the poll you created (and pictured below) up on your site and then expect me to take you seriously? I’m having some difficulty doing so.

“Black Power”?? Are you kidding me?

  • 9 Robert // Jul 31, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Marc– I have been thinking about leaving a comment here for a while pointing to how wrong you actually are, but it took me a while to determine whether or not ridiculousness on your level actually merits a response.

I decided you weren’t worth it, but I couldn’t help yourself.

First, I challenge YOU to look at the photo, because its blatantly obvious that you either have never seen it, or have never been to a church that practices any charismaticism. That picture is obviously people laying hands on somebody, praying for them. Have you seriously never seen this? It’s a very common practice. You wouldn’t be trying to scour up fear of Obama, would you?

And that stupid quote you people keep dredging up–its fake. Dana Milbank straight up MADE IT UP. Lee Atwater style. Check it out: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/206529.php . I doubt you will. I think you are very happy trying to believe that Obama is full of himself.

You are a fool. You are happily ignorant and will never change. You don’t deserve this response, but I felt the need to at least point out how and where you are wrong.

  • 10 Marc Carey // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Jeezel Pete’s Jake, that was pretty harsh. I mean, the debate was over how images in the media can be used for propaganda.

I didn’t compare Obama to Lenin, Hitler or Hussein. I cautioned how in the past the images of other Marxists have been used to create the impression that the subject was “larger than life” or even God-like.

And the quote from Hitler should teach us all how powerful political propaganda can be.

And what, any picture of black people is ipso facto racist, no matter what they might be doing or what the photo message might be? You’re kidding right?

  • 11 jake // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Harsh? You mentioned Lenin, Hussein and Hitler in a comment about Barack Obama. I’m not pulling things out of my ass, here.

You posted a photo of Barack Obama in the middle of some prominent black people praying with him, laying on hands. And then you used a ridiculous headline and questioned Obama’s integrity. There was nothing about him being larger than life.

No, I’m not kidding. Especially with that horse shit poll that you created and posted on your site.

  • 12 Robert // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:21 pm

I totally missed the part where a picture of people praying becomes propaganda. I need to throw out a whole bunch of pictures…

Also, I totally missed your logical connection of the existence of a picture of black people and racism. Could you maybe unpack that one for us?

  • 13 Joe Sonka // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:22 pm

“any picture”? yes, the ones with their fist in the air where you ask if its a secret black power fist.

    “other Marxists”- fuck you.

this scum is a pathetic coward who won’t even admit what he’s up to.

Oh, well, his team is going to lose big in November, nevertheless. Then we can ban his X-mas and get those Obama logos tatooed on his kids in the public schools.

  • 14 Marc Carey // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:41 pm

I mentioned how the images of Lenin and Hussein were used and quoted Hitler regarding the power of propaganda. I did not COMPARE Obama to any of them. That’s a bit of a mischaracterization.

I do believe that ongoing efforts to paint Obama as the “symbol of the moment the world has been waiting for” could be assisted by media photos portraying him as any kind of saviour (beyond the obvious claims to political salvation from the left’s hatred of President Bush).

And the poll I posted was inspired by the very wide spread public debate over the fist bump between Mr. and Mrs. O, as well as what appeared to me to be a ramp up to the issue of race making it into the forefront of the campaign, which it did today.

In fact, as we engage in this debate here, tonight, the blogosphere is covered from coast to coast with stories about who is making race an issue. As a result of this debate I just put up another poll asking this very question.

So tell me, what rule is it that says I can’t even ask people what they think about topics being discussed all across America without it being labeled racist “horse shit”?

I gave my readers every choice I could think of when the images of the Obama’s holding up their fists were being plastered around on other websites all across the country.

Readers could answer yes they are giving the black power salute, no they are not, maybe they are or no they are being misunderstood.

If an issue is being discussed around the world, what makes it off limits to ask people what they think of it on my blog?

Oh, by the way, just for the record, the results strongly indicated that people tended to believe that the Obama’s were likely giving a coded signal. And while these polls are far from sophistated, they are set so that no one reader can vote more than once (based on a cookie of course).

  • 15 Marc Carey // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Robert, for the record, Barack Obama signed a pledge to be a member of the New Marxist party when he was running for his State Senate seat. The document has been widely circulated and a link to it can be found in an earlier post on my blog.

  • 16 David Adams // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:47 pm

    Jake,

I might participate in the next end-of-the-world economic slowdown. Lord knows I participated in the last one. But I’m sitting this one out.

    Goooooooooo…. us!

  • 17 Robert // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:50 pm

If there was any comment that embodies the stupidity you’ve shown this evening, this is it.

If I had a poll on my website that said “IS MARC CAREY AN IDIOT” and the choices were yes, no, and maybe, would YOU think that was “horse shit?” I think you would. I definitely think you SHOULD. Plus, I think the folks who visit your site are probably a little unbalanced towards right-wing nutjobs. Your defense=terrible.

  • 18 Joe Sonka // Jul 31, 2008 at 11:58 pm

He’s just a coward. A stupid and racist coward, sure. But he’s mostly just a coward.

  • 19 jake // Aug 1, 2008 at 12:00 am

I really don’t think he’s a coward or a racist. His actions, definitely racially insensitive.

But it’s all mind-boggling that people can’t grasp when what they say can be racially insensitive, racist, homophobic, sexist, yadda yadda. People don’t have to sensor themselves but folks need to realize that it’s not just a WASP world out there.

  • 20 Joe Sonka // Aug 1, 2008 at 12:03 am

He knows that racism works with some people, and he uses it for those means. And then he won’t admit to it.

    COWARD.

  • 21 Terri // Aug 1, 2008 at 10:16 am

At mass last Sunday, the priest was giving children terrorist fist-jabs as he left the church. SCARY!

  • 22 Joe Sonka // Aug 1, 2008 at 11:11 am

Think of the children!!!!! Oh noo!!

  • 23 briansmith // Aug 1, 2008 at 11:41 am
