Jefferson County Republicans held a picnic yesterday and 80389483 (okay, like 300) people showed up to drink Ensure and eat delicious ambrosia salad and cream of wheat.
Oh, guess who else was there! Katie King and her loyal Republican friend, Denise Bentley. And… dun dun dun… Frank Simon and crew. No word on whether or not Frank approved of the gay country western elephant.
Send in your photos, kids. We’d love to see Frank and Denise in a picture together.

Not surprising to hear Katie King is sucking up to the GOP. Her daddy Jim was busted last fall coming out of a Mitch McConnell fundraiser. He claims he was there to talk bidness with Mitch but his behavior when caught was beyond bizzare. Since this was mere weeks before the vote for the Metro Council presidency he went into damage control mode, calling and apologizing to dem activists like a drunk the morning after getting aggressively naked at the country club soiree. He lied to the mother of a soldier fighting in Iraq by telling her he would educate himself on the war in Iraq (he confessed ignorance about the whole issue, he’s the dumb jock and that stuff is for the smart kids). He also promised to meet her at an upcoming seminar on the Iraq war, and of course he never showed up. Anything to maintain, consolidate and increase his power. Which is why he’s buying his daughter a judgeship. I know, she claims she is “working her little tail off”. The fact that her daddy is metro council president is the only reason she has the name recognition and connections to get past the primaries. It is certainly not based on any significant experience. And her daddy needs to know he will have great difficulties with the progressives in this community when he invariably runs for mayor.

The GOP may be the party of the Big Tent, but I don’t think the tent Friday held 80 million. However, the spirit at the Republican RoundUp seemed about 80 million strong.
I have never seemed so energized about Republican politics in Jefferson County.
The crowd there ranged from young singles that looked like they just drove straight back from Woodstock, to yuppy families with kids, to paunchy middle aged men, to the senior set. While the crowd was overwhelmingly white, there were a few African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans scattered throughout. Diversity at a GOP event–Who’d a thunk it?
People seemed excited about the new GOP Chairman Brad Cummings and his new leadership. They were happy and energized. And they seemed very focused on the candidates. Anne Northup had to catch her breath from her own excitement. Even some of the crotchety old timers like Merv Brandes and Frank Simon had a smiles on their faces.
The Jefferson County Republicn Party had hit a brick wall. Didn’t the late Randy Pausch say something about brick walls: Brick walls are there to teach you how much you want something. Brad and his crew at JC GOP HQ look like they have hit some brick walls and are ready to climb over them.
All the races in Jefferson County look like something to watch this year. I might just watch from the inside. I might just get involved. This looks likes a happening place.

a few non-whites = diversity?
was anyone there not christian?
not straight?
not upper or middle class?
not able-bodied?

I was there and the ethnic diversity was stronger than one would expect. I would say about 10-15% non-white which considering the fact that our county is about 15-20% minority, not too bad for a party that traditionally struggles in that realm.
I never asked anyone about their religious background or their sexual preference. Didn’t seem appropriate.
There were a lot of folks who were lower-lower middle class there. And several mentally and physically handicapped people as well. EVERYONE was invited. Don’t judge an event if you weren’t there. I thought Democrats were against that.

First: There’s no evidence that they’re Democrats.
Second: It’s sexual orientation. Preference would mean there’s a choice. Though, I’d assume some bisexual folks may have a preference.

Touche on both accounts…especially the second one. Definitely didn’t mean to imply choice.
You have to admit the odds are pretty strong “Hillary” is a Democrat, though.

I’m not judging the event, just questioning some ideas/conceptions of diversity.
8 3CardNana // Jul 27, 2008 at 11:12 pm
How are you not judging when you questioned how diverse the event was without being there? The tone of your post was certainly negative, you can’t deny that.

I’ll add this: Yes, I am a registered Democrat. And I think most would agree that even the Democratic Party hasn’t totally figured out multiculturalism. I applaud the JCRP for a step in a good direction… Keep it up.

3CardNana: I don’t think it was negative at all. I was genuinely interested in other kinds of people that may have been at the picnic.
Would it have been judgmental if I had assumed how diverse the event was without being there? Yes.
What did I do? Ask questions instead of assuming. That seems pretty non-judgmental to me…

I would submit that a person has a preference of whether they’d prefer to engage in a homosexual sex act or if they’d prefer to remain celibate. :-p

Not My: Is this some sort of faux-Christianity lecture about how the homos choose to do it in the pooper or whatever? (Hope you like that imagery)
13 Not My Birth Name // Jul 28, 2008 at 9:39 am
No it isn’t. My wife and I have different sexual preferences but leads to the same result for both of us. She prefers to remain celibate and I don’t.
(rimshot….)
And for the record, I have done it in the pooper — granted it was in the shower portion of the pooper, but it counts.
Oh wait, you aren’t talking about a bathroom when you say pooper, are you? :-p
