Bruce Lunsford’s Contribution History Examined

May 8th, 2008 · 7 Comments

There’s been a lot of discussion about the amount of money Bruce Lunsford has contributed to Republicans over the years. Like we pointed out yesterday for the millionth time, Greg Fischer didn’t know what a Democrat was until he decided to run for political office.

Oh, right. Bruce Lunsford. Let’s take a look at his contribution history. Again.

It is not true that a majority of Bruce’s contributions went to Republicans. It’s just not true.

In 1997 Bruce gave $18,000 to Republicans, $3,500 to Democrats
In 1998 Bruce gave $4,250 to Republicans, $5,900 to Democrats
In 1999 Bruce gave $500 to Republicans, $1,600 to Democrats
In 2000 Bruce gave $1,000 to Republicans, $500 to Democrats
In 2001 Bruce gave $0 to Republicans, $8,500 to Democrats
In 2002 Bruce gave $1,000 to Republicans, $1,900 to Democrats
In 2003 Bruce gave $0 to Republicans, $1,700 to Democrats
In 2004 Bruce gave $2,000 to Republicans, $3,500 to Democrats
In 2005 Bruce gave $1,500 to Republicans, $13,750 to Democrats
In 2006 Bruce gave $4,100 to Republicans, $12,350 to Democrats
In 2007 Bruce gave $0 to Republicans, $48,500 to Democrats

Since 1997 Bruce has given $32,350 to Republicans and $101,700 to Democrats. That’s 24.13% Republican and 75.87% Democrat. In this decade alone he’s given under $10k to Republicans and over $90k to Democrats.

More after the jump…

We’ve done the research as far back as 1987 and can dig into all that, if readers would like. But one fact remains: Lunsford has given far more to Democrats than Republicans could ever dream of receiving. Proportionally, Greg Fischer has given a similar percentage to Republicans. But that seems to be ignored by his supporters.

This site isn’t here to continually defend Bruce Lunsford. We’re not happy that Andrew Horne was forced out of the race by the powers that be. We’re not happy that Greg Fischer sought to be the establishment’s candidate of choice (while Horne was being forced out by the establishment AND Fischer’s supporters) only to deny those actions when it became politically advantageous for him to do so.

And we’re not happy that we don’t have a strong candidate with grassroots support (spare me the argument that Fischer is either, he’s clearly not) to put up against Mitch McConnell. But let’s get something straight: Bruce Lunsford isn’t a Republican and he has certainly given more money to Democrats than he has Republicans. Dislike it if you will, but it’s fact.

My personal opinion, that’s $32,350.00 too much.

I feel myself to be a good Democratric Party person and will act accordingly, but don’t hand me Kool Aide from the Jonestown cafeteria and tell me everything is peachy.

And let’s not forget this wonderful moment in time…

I’m all for reality based assessments- as long as we can all agree on what the reality is here.

There’s no argument here with me that it’s $32K too much. It’s just too much.

But giving money to Republicans doesn’t make you an evil person in Kentucky. It makes you just like everybody else– including Greg Fischer.

    Jake,

I appreciate what you’re saying here, but I personally have never been a supporter of the ‘clap louder’ school of politics.

I speak only for myself- there’s not much about Bruce Lunsford that excites me as a candidate. When you factor in Bruce’s difficult past events and allegiances; as well as McConnell’s political assets- then I think you have a recipe for real electoral trouble. Clearly I’m not the only one who see’s this.

This is not a statement about ‘what could have been’ but a coldly rational look at the existing lay of the land. Some will call it ‘bashing’ Bruce; I think of it as just pointing out the particular color of lipstick applied to this situational pig.

I’m a bit suspicious of the $48k he donated to Democrats last year. Looks like a C-Y-A move to me, as it’s more than 3x what he’d given to Democrats in any year before that.

Most was given after he lost in last year’s primary with the exception of his presidential contribs. $20K to DNC, $10K to Beshear Inaugural, $9,200 to presidential.
