Every year Churchill Downs is flooded with political types during the Kentucky Derby. They mostly show up for the Democratic Governors Association’s largest fundraiser of the year (I stand corrected– it’s not the largest fundraiser of the year, shame on our DGA source for fibbing!), but this year the political big wigs are showing up to campaign for Barack Obama.
From a recent release:
Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy, New Mexico Governor and former presidential candidate Bill Richardson, along with Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius will all put on their best Derby outfits—and their Obama pins—and attend the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby this Saturday in Louisville. Additionally, Kentucky Congressmen and Obama backers John Yarmuth and Ben Chandler will be at Churchill Downs for the big race. All of these Obama supporters will participate in campaign activities throughout the weekend.
In addition to the DGA events at the Downs, we hear wealthy politico Charlie Owen will be holding a party at his lovely home in Mockingbird Valley for some of the biggest political names in the country. If you’re important enough to be invited, let us know how it goes and do not forget your cellphone camera in the car.
And if anyone spots Chelsea during the Derby, snap a photo. We’re only high society enough to get into Oaks this year.
