KY-03 Congressional Update

April 10th, 2008 · 18 Comments

Former Ernie Fletcher spokesman Brett Hall reports that Anne Northup has only raised $450,000 for her congressional campaign. Not exactly impressive for a woman with her power and connections.

Her campaign is receiving positive buzz, both at home and from the Beltway. She is poised to win the GOP primary by a wide margin. And, if reports are true, she will have posted an impressive fundraising total of $450,000 — all collected in just two months.

Of course there are qualifiers. By this time in past campaigns Northup had raised three times that total ($1.7 million in 2006), and with smaller maximum amounts. And $450,000 will only go so far against a millionare incumbent like Yarmuth.

In response, Rep. John Yarmuth’s re-election campaign announced that he has so far raised $1.1 million. An amount that does not include any of his own money. Meaning he won’t have to use his personal wealth to get re-elected.

(Louisville, KY) The campaign of Congressman John Yarmuth announced today the fundraising total for his re-election efforts reached $1,093,205 at the end of the first quarter of 2008. The campaign received more than 800 individual contributions this quarter. Yarmuth for Congress has now received nearly 2,800 individual contributions for the 2008 election cycle.

This will be interesting to watch.

UPDATE: Woops. Looks like BGRS had it long before Brett.

Northup’s race has been selected by the NRCC’s Regain Our Majority Program (ROMP 2008).

The joke of ROMP is that of the 10 selected races, KY-03 is the only seat currently held by a Democrat!

come on, jake. i thought you were one to give credit where it’s due. http://www.bluegrassredstate.com/2008/04/northup-doesnt-miss-fundraising-beat.html

besides, don’t you think 450k is pretty damn good for about 60 days worth of work? http://www.bluegrassredstate.com/2008/04/yarmuth-has-abysmal-fundraising-first.html

yarmuth’s money came in in about 450 days.

    spin cycle, baby.

Oh, Anne…what to say, what to say? I mean, hell, I think we’ve moved beyond “she’s a total fucking asshole” or “why doesn’t she just call it a day and move on?” to “bless her heart.”

    Mr. Poole:

    One word: iPhone

  • 7 Jake // Apr 10, 2008 at 8:57 pm

lots of words: iPhone sucks butt hole for use with WordPress.

In my experience, it’s always best to use a puter. Forget trying to do this shiz with a Treo like I’m apt to do. It’s a nightmare.

  • 8 bluegrassredstate // Apr 11, 2008 at 8:52 am

i’d love an iPhone, but i can’t imagine blogging without some sort of peripheral rollup keyboard type thingy. the puter is by far the best option.

maybe one of those airbooks or whatever. can you drive over those and have them still work?

    Jake,

It’s hard to tell when you’re being serious these days, but if you really think $450 K isn’t huge for a challenger then you’ve lost all credibility. Spin is fine but don’t make ridiculous statements like this one.

We’re talking about Anne Northup, one of the most prolific fundraisers EVER in Kentucky. Ever.

And the talk in Republican leadership circles these days is that Rep. Northup has struggled a bit with money she would traditionally be able to pull just from friends.

So, for Northup, nope. $450k isn’t huge. It’d be huge for someone like Erwin Roberts, though, or someone who hadn’t been in politics before.

But I’m not saying $450k is a disappointment.

    Jake,

I call shenanigans, who do you know in Republican leadership?

You should go back and look at Northups previous 1st quarter receipts, in 2004 she reported $384K in Q1 receipts. Also, let’s face it, Norhtup isn’t your average challenger as her name ID is probably higher that John’s.

This one is gonna be close and you guys are getting worried.

    That’s right, I said shenanigans.

  • 12 jake // Apr 11, 2008 at 11:18 am

Why would *I* be worried about John Yarmuth losing? No matter who wins, I’ll have friends in the KY-03 congressional office. I’m not “you guys” and any regular reader would know I regularly give the KDP the what-for. That’s part of the whole not being a partisan hack thing, I guess.

And that’s right– Northup has super-high name I.D., meaning she should be literally raking in millions.

Who do I know in Republican leadership? I’m not about to drop names. But you’re free to ask around. Most folks in statewide media can confirm it, as can both political party HQs. It’s a documented fact that the Republican Party has been more receptive to our operation than the Democratic Party.

“This one is gonna be close and you guys are getting worried.”

Oh man. I think I just peed myself. I’m not a betting man, but I’d stake a large (for me) sum of money on KY-03.

Quick question: Does anyone think that when Northup is defeated again, she’ll let it go? She’s a savvy and well-connected woman, and I know she would likely excel in a behind-the-scenes capacity.

  • 14 Joe // Apr 11, 2008 at 11:59 am

Simmer down now Jake my boy, nobody’s calling you a partisan hack.

Love her or hate her, Anne consistently sets an example by managing to always provide free bumper stickers right there on her website.

So far, I’ve sent 309,004 to a small township in the Netherlands.

Anne Northup did herself no favors with rank and file Republicans by challenging her party’s incumbent governor in the primary.

LOTS of people are still steamed over that. They may vote for her but they won’t donate or do any legwork.

Your right, when Northup jumped into the Governors Race, it hurt Fletchers chances of re-election… but lets face it, Fletcher was doomed to lose since his pardoning became public! I think a few wealthy higher-ups got in her ear and told her that she would have a better chance of keeping the Governors mansion in the GOP if she ran…

As far as the Congressional Race, I am already on the schedule to volunteer walk 100 houses in the Southwest Jefferson County area! I also know that she is speaking at the American Family Associations Chicken Dinner & Candidate Night @ Evangel World Prayer Center on May 6th! After consistent contact with her events and volunteer directors, Anne is trying to reach out to more of her Conservative base that she split during the Governors race a year ago. I also know that she has already purchased a booth for the Southwest Festival in late October. Those are two key things that could really help her election numbers… Motivate Conservative Voters rather than just simply get their check-mark, and show areas like Valley Station & PRP some love for a change. Southwest Jefferson County may not seem like much to those people in “other” parts of town, but these 25,000 people can easily turn an election.

You mean Anne Northup is going to Evangel World Prayer Center– the church that aligns itself with bigot Frank Simon, the church that puts bigot Frank Simon on television?

Wow. So much for Anne (and any other candidate who plan to attend) not throwing her plethora of gays, Jews, non-whites, women, et al under the bus.
