Fischer Campaign Finance Take XXXXVII

April 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

Greg Fischer’s Democratic campaign for U.S. Senate could yet again be in a sticky situation involving campaign finance. When will the insanity of amateur hour end?

Yesterday one of Fischer’s campaign staffers (A.J. Carrillo did not respond to an email requesting verification of the staffer’s employment) wrote a story on BlueGrassRoots which potentially drags the Fischer campaign and others into a scenario involving both the FEC and IRS. In his story about how terrible Bruce Lunsford is and how amazing Greg Fischer is, the staffer made the call for someone to form a Political Action Committee to take on Lunsford, Fischer’s Democratic opponent.

Instead of basing your sentiment on what you read on the blogosphere, GET OUT AND TALK TO PEOPLE about this race. Do something to help. Someone could start a PAC and rerun the ads Ben Chandler ran in ’03 against Lunsford, because we know the truth of the matter: If they are not run now, THEY WILL BE RUNNING shortly after the primary and Lunsford will be done.

Unfortunately, whether the Fischer camp realizes it or not, it’s illegal for a campaign to urge someone else to start a PAC (even loosely) to run ads against their opponent. For the record, no one here believes the staffer, David Fitts, should be the one to shoulder blame– it’s the Fischer campaign all the way who should be held responsible. It’s their responsibility to educate their staff and supporters.

After all of the campaign finance muddy water Fischer has been in since before he jumped into the race, you’d think he’d be busily working toward complete compliance with the law, avoiding all gray areas. Instead, he’s continually allowed his staff to make amateur mistakes over and over. This has got to stop at some point. Fischer has got to realize that continual mistakes like this could get him into a heap of trouble.
