We told you that Hillary Clinton’s decision to involve Steve and Heather French Henry in her campaign for the U.S. Presidency was a bad idea.
That was two days ago.
Well, whattya know? It only took two days for the screw-up to take place.
Here’s the backstory: Steve Henry purchased a building (allegedly with funds from his 1998 Senate campaign fund which he paid Jake and others out of to do gubernatorial campaign work) at 1357 Bardstown Road in Louisville in 2006 and placed it in the name of his longtime friend Steve O. Thornton, a Bowling Green attorney. Shortly thereafter Henry filed to run for governor with Renee True as his lieutenant. After failing miserably on the campaign trail, Henry’s building sat quiet and filled with junk for a few months. Until recently, that is, when the building popped up on the Jefferson County PVA’s website in the name of “FUTURE FUND ENDOWMENT INC THE,” one of Henry’s non-profit foundations. Which is interesting in and of itself if you’re familiar with the entire Henry story of the past few years.

Read about potential campaign finance violations involving Henry and the Clinton campaign after the jump, complete with photographs…
Which brings us to today. An astute Page One reader tipped us off that Henry’s building was awash in Hillary Clinton campaign material, posters all over the place, with a huge and official campaign sign in the front window. Naturally, we snapped photographs for your viewing pleasure.

This means one of two things: 1. Steve Henry is using property of a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation (Future Fund) to promote the Clinton campaign. 2. The Clinton campaign is paying the Future Fund rent for use of the space. Which do you think is more likely? Right, Steve Henry is unfortunately pulling the Clinton campaign into a potential campaign finance nightmare with his 501(c)3– as if he doesn’t have enough of a campaign finance nightmare to deal with.
As you’re probably well aware if you’re reading our fancy little website, collusion among non-profit organizations and political campaigns is, uh, a little illegal. Especially if the campaign for which the organization is electioneering has nothing to do with the cause of the organization. And what on earth does a presidential campaign have to do with Steve Henry’s land preservation fund/slush fund? Nothing.
The Clinton campaign needs to distance itself ASAP.
Steve & Heather + Hillary = bad idea. We told you so.
Will Steve Henry ever learn?
Full Disclosure: Jake is involved in the Henry investigation and is one of the two individuals who initially alleged wrongdoing by Henry in late 2006. Stay tuned over the coming months.

Hey Jake- I thought this was an interesting statement from this post:
“As you’re probably well aware if you’re reading our fancy little website, collusion among non-profit organizations and political campaigns is, uh, a little illegal. Especially if the campaign for which the organization is electioneering has nothing to do with the cause of the organization.”
Any difference in this and Beshear’s connection to the Bluegrass Freedom Fund predominantly funded by those who stand to gain a lot if Beshear’s gambling bill had passed?
And if not, is anyone actually investigating this?

Wondering: Bluegrass Freedom Fund is a 527 organization, which is a bit different than Henry’s 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
527s can be political and 501(c)3s can’t do much in the realm of politickin.
Last I heard the feds were looking at the casino money ordeal. Not so much at the Bluegrass Freedom Fund, which is a legitimate organization, but at the major donors like Bill Yung and the Beshear crew for whatever role they played.

Thanks for the explanation. It just appears that this particularly 527 was just a backhanded way for the casino moguls and horse people to contribute large amounts to the campaign fund to get Beshear elected for their financial benefit.

Well, at least we got rid of Fletcher. What we got wasn’t much better, but at least it’s better.

Magruder – Give me a break. If Fletcher had done an ‘inth of what Beshear has done, he would have been impeached already.
