Boswell Says Jim Gooch Should Be Fired

March 28th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Sen. David Boswell made comments at a recent legislative forum sponsored by the Owensboro Chamber of Commerce indicating that anyone who signs a no new tax pledge should be fired.

Fine and dandy, right?

What’s hilarious, really, is that Jim Gooch (D-Walrus) was in attendance. Just who had signed that no new tax pledge? Why, Jim Gooch (PDF link) himself.

The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer documented it all this past Sunday. The paper’s site is subscription-only, so you’ll have to rely on our excerpt.

Boswell said part of state’s revenue problem is that some legislators have signed pledges for no new taxes. Meanwhile, efforts to pass expanding gambling bills — which supporters believe would generate millions of dollars in new revenue — have “not generated any traction,” Boswell said.

“Anyone that signs a ‘no tax’ pledge should be fired from elected office,” Boswell said.

We salute David Boswell and second his motion to fire Jim Gooch. Finally– a Democrat who stands up and loudly proclaims that Gooch needs to go. Maybe the KDP will stop playing coy and actually call for his ouster. We won’t hold our breath.

What about Ben Chandler? Should he be fired? He signed a “no tax” pledge too?

    100%, yes.

    Fire that tired hack.

If I lived in that district I’d vote for a Republican before I voted for him.

More importantly, salute Boswell for effectively making the very real statement that taxes need to be sufficient to support the government.

Still, you are right, Gooch needs to go. Lean on your friends at the KDP to find someone between now and the January 2010 filing deadline to run.

Any politician who makes such pre-decisions is immature, and this is why government has become so very irresponsible to the public’s needs. I’m not one who loves the idea of raising taxes; in fact, I loathe it. However, I think it’s stupid for politicians to say they won’t do something that might end up being the only choice in particular budgetary situations during their term.
