Bunning In a Finance Sticky

February 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Senile Senator Jim Bunning (R-Needs to Let Trey Run in His Place) is under fire these days from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington for having paid his daughter ONE BILLION DOLLARS for working on his campaign.

According to a Herald-Leader story, Bunning paid his daughter more than $138,000 over the course of seven years to handle his campaign finance paperwork. That’s about $20K/year. While some are up in arms about the man paying his own daughter a large sum of money, well, we’ve gotta break it down for a few people: big damn deal.

Bunning has used campaign money to pay his daughter, Amy Towles, more than $138,000 to keep track of his elections’ financial paperwork.

That’s more than any other senator paid family members for similar work, according to a new report by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a liberal government watchdog group.

While paying family members for such work is not illegal, watchdog groups say such practices should face tighter scrutiny.

We gag at the thought of Jim Bunning pretending to be a leader in the U.S. Senate. But $20k/year to work as the finance nerd on a campaign? What’s the big deal?

Who in their right mind would do that job for less than $75,000-$80,000? (Ugh. Can’t believe we’re taking up for Bunning. Unclean!) It’s not an easy job. Dealing with the FEC isn’t a cake walk. Placating hateful old men whom you’re trying to haggle money out of is nearly an impossible task. So we think the big issue here is why Bunning’s daughter would work so cheaply.

Glad that Bunning doesn’t have 14 kids, or this would become a bigger story.
