Draft?

August 16th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Americans Against Escalation in Iraq (AAEI) have launched an ad critical of Senator Mitch McConnell and his support of the Iraq War:

Their press release says it’ll air in college towns on MTV, ESPN and other popular networks.

What’s your opinion?

I think it is slightly disingenuous of the “Campaign to Defend America” to suggest that the draft is a real option. There is no chance in hell that the American public would tolerate the draft, and both parties know it. I think that commercials like this one, which are not intellectually honest, hurt the cause more than help it. I want this war ended ASAP and out troops out of the civil war in Iraq, but I think honesty is a better policy.

It’s not disingenuous to suggest that the current military commitment is straining our armed forces to the point that it can only be sustained with something like the draft. Sure, neither the public nor the military would allow it, but that’s a reality to be dealt with by those pushing us to stay on this unsustainable course.
